Pele Energy Group is seeking a highly motivated Junior Researcher to support the organisation’s expanding portfolio of qualitative and quantitative research projects. The role is designed for an early-career professional with strong analytical capability, excellent organisational skills and a commitment to advancing evidence-based insights within South Africa’s energy landscape. The Junior Researcher will play a central role in ensuring that all research activities are completed to the highest standards of accuracy, integrity and methodological consistency. Overview of the Role The Junior Researcher will manage research projects from design through data collection and analysis, ensuring that information is gathered according to approved methodologies and stored in line with organisational protocols. A key component of the position involves identifying, training and managing field teams responsible for collecting community-level data. The role blends operational project management with hands-on analytical work and requires strong communication skills, the ability to lead teams and a commitment to rigorous reporting. Key Responsibilities Research Project Management The Junior Researcher will be responsible for coordinating all fieldwork and ensuring the timely and accurate execution of project plans. Core responsibilities include: Identifying, recruiting and training community-based data collectors both remotely and in person. Managing performance and contractual obligations of all enumerators. Delivering research materials to data collection teams in a timely manner. Implementing daily check-in systems to verify progress and ensure data quality. Conducting daily verifications to identify irregularities and prevent fraudulent submissions. Ensuring that all data is received, archived and stored in its original format. Gathering feedback from field teams to refine future project logistics and methodologies. Managing payments and administrative processes associated with assigned research projects. Data Management Effective data management is essential to maintaining high-quality outputs. The Junior Researcher will: File all original data electronically in clearly labelled and structured folders. Collate data in formats appropriate to the requirements of each study. Prepare datasets for analysis by checking completeness, accuracy and formatting consistency. Data Analysis The role requires the ability to translate raw data into meaningful insights. Responsibilities include: Analysing quantitative and qualitative data for all assigned projects. Ensuring that all analytical outputs are clearly labelled, explained and contextualised. Compiling quarterly summary reports that highlight key findings, particularly those related to energy communities. Reporting and Presentation The Junior Researcher will contribute to the organisation’s growing knowledge base by producing high-quality written and visual outputs. Key tasks include: Conducting and writing desktop studies using established Pele methodologies. Compiling structured research reports aligned with format and content guidelines provided by the line manager. Preparing presentations that communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders. Presenting reports when required by project leads. Training and Capacity Building The role involves supporting the development of internal and external research capacity: Training data collectors, research assistants and analysts on relevant project work and methodologies. Ad-Hoc Responsibilities As part of a dynamic organisation, the Junior Researcher will be expected to: Travel to remote locations when necessary to support field operations or address project challenges. Assist in broader organisational initiatives that may fall outside the immediate job profile. Desired Skills and Qualifications Candidates should demonstrate strong academic performance, practical experience and a commitment to community-centred research. Required and preferred qualifications include: An Honours Degree with a minimum B average; an A average is ideal. At least 2 years of experience in research, project management, management consulting or community development. Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken. Proficiency in at least one other South African language; proficiency in two or more is preferred. A valid driver’s licence. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, methodical, able to work independently and comfortable leading diverse teams. A strong understanding of research ethics, data integrity and community dynamics is essential for success in this role.
