Role Overview The appointed candidate will play a key role in a research project exploring the impact of artificial intelligence and automation on laboratory practices in pathogen molecular biology, with a particular emphasis on virology research. The position is ideally suited to individuals trained in Science and Technology Studies or a closely related discipline, especially those with experience in laboratory ethnography. This research examines how emerging technologies are transforming the life sciences, particularly in microbiology and virology laboratories. It seeks to better understand how data-driven approaches and automation are influencing scientific processes, knowledge production, and research outcomes. Key Responsibilities Conduct interdisciplinary research on artificial intelligence and automation in laboratory environments Analyze changes in scientific methods and workflows within microbiology and virology Investigate how knowledge is generated, interpreted, and applied in modern laboratory settings Contribute to collaborative research efforts within the Centre for Pandemic Risk Management Produce high-quality academic outputs, including publications and reports Engage with stakeholders across science, policy, and academia Research Context The life sciences sector is undergoing rapid transformation due to advancements in big data, machine learning, and automated systems. These developments are reshaping how laboratory research is conducted and how scientific knowledge is produced and utilized. This project focuses on: The scale and nature of technological changes in laboratory environments The integration of artificial intelligence into scientific workflows The implications of automation for research accuracy, efficiency, and ethics The evolving relationship between scientists and technological tools The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH), a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation at Cambridge.
