About the PHEPRR Fellowship Program The Public Health Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery (PHEPRR) Fellowship is a four-month professional training initiative designed to strengthen the capacity of public health practitioners to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. Developed through a collaboration among Georgetown University, ICAP at Columbia University, and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the fellowship emphasizes the integration of emergency preparedness principles within existing public health programs. This fellowship is structured to equip participants with practical skills and strategic insight that enhance organizational resilience during crises. The program focuses on ensuring that public health systems can effectively manage increased emergency demands while sustaining the delivery of essential services. Through a blended learning model that may include virtual sessions, interactive modules, and applied learning activities, participants gain exposure to operational frameworks, coordination mechanisms, and workforce readiness strategies used in emergency management. A core feature of the fellowship is the implementation of a capstone project. Each fellow is required to design and execute a project that directly contributes to improving preparedness, response, or recovery capacity within their home institution. These projects reflect contextual challenges faced across the West African region and aim to provide sustainable solutions that strengthen public health infrastructure and workforce capabilities. The process enables fellows to apply newly acquired skills to real-world scenarios, while receiving guidance from technical mentors and subject-matter experts. Target Audience for the Fellowship The fellowship is intended for mid-career public health professionals working across diverse sectors that may contribute to emergency preparedness but are not traditionally engaged in emergency operations. It specifically targets individuals who do not specialize in Emergency Operations Centers (EOC), Incident Management Systems (IMS), or Rapid Response Teams (RRTs). Eligible applicants may come from National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs), Ministries of Health, Ministries of Agriculture, the military sector, or other multisectoral institutions. Professionals working within disease-specific programs—such as Measles, Polio, HIV, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), One Health, surveillance, laboratory systems, health communications, or clinical and hospital services—are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should be based at regional, national, or subnational levels within West African countries. The program seeks individuals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening public health systems and who have the support of their institutions to execute a capstone initiative. Application Requirements and Documentation To ensure a comprehensive review, applicants must submit a complete set of documents as part of their application package. All files should be uploaded in PDF format unless otherwise specified.
