The Pulitzer Center has officially launched the application process for the fifth cohort of its AI Accountability Fellowships, inviting journalists worldwide to submit proposals for in-depth investigations into the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Applications are open for the 2026–2027 fellowship cycle, with a submission deadline of July 12, 2026. Supporting Investigative Journalism on AI Accountability As artificial intelligence continues to shape governments, businesses, workplaces, and communities across the globe, the demand for rigorous and independent reporting on its real-world effects has grown significantly. Recognizing this need, the Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Fellowships aim to support journalists investigating the opportunities, risks, labor concerns, governance challenges, and societal consequences associated with AI technologies. The program provides selected fellows with funding, mentorship, training, and access to a global community of peers. Through these resources, journalists can pursue ambitious reporting projects that examine how AI systems are financed, developed, deployed, and regulated by governments, corporations, and other influential institutions. Building on Four Years of Global Impact Since its launch in 2022, the AI Accountability Fellowship program has supported 35 journalists across five continents. Fellows have produced impactful investigations exploring a wide range of AI-related issues, including: • The role of data labelers and their connections to military projects • The environmental and economic implications of data center expansion • Algorithmic flaws affecting poverty-targeting systems in Peru • The export of facial recognition technologies to countries with weak regulatory frameworks • The influence of major technology companies on AI infrastructure development These investigations have generated tangible outcomes, including contributing to new legislation in Brazil, providing evidence for legal proceedings, and inspiring educational and civic engagement initiatives focused on AI accountability. Opportunities for Journalists Worldwide For the 2026–2027 cohort, the Pulitzer Center plans to select between eight and ten journalists from around the world. The fellowship welcomes proposals examining the effects of algorithmic and automated systems on communities and encourages reporting across the entire AI supply chain. Particular encouragement is being extended to: • Journalists from the Global South • Reporters from underrepresented communities • Investigative journalists covering technology, labor, governance, and public policy • Independent and newsroom-based reporters interested in AI accountability Applicants are also encouraged to participate in the Pulitzer Center’s AI Spotlight Series training sessions or explore the program’s educational materials available online in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. New Impact-Focused Funding Component A notable addition to this year’s fellowship is dedicated support for audience engagement and impact strategies. For the first time, fellows will receive funding, mentorship, and training specifically designed to help investigations reach strategic audiences and create measurable public impact. Potential engagement activities may include: • Collaborating with digital content creators • Producing community-focused educational materials • Developing public awareness campaigns • Hosting discussions involving civil society organizations, policymakers, industry representatives, and researchers • Creating locally tailored resources such as zines, exhibitions, or educational toolkits This new component reflects the Pulitzer Center’s commitment to ensuring that investigative journalism drives meaningful public dialogue and accountability. Fellowship Benefits and Requirements The fellowship will run for ten months, beginning in September 2026. Selected fellows can receive funding of up to $25,000, allocated as follows: • Up to $20,000 for reporting expenses • Up to $5,000 for engagement and impact activities Funding may be used for: • Travel expenses • Records requests • Data analysis • Research costs • Reporting stipends • Other approved project-related expenses In addition to financial support, fellows will gain access to experienced mentors and specialized training opportunities designed to strengthen investigative reporting on AI systems. Successful applicants will be expected to: • Participate in mandatory monthly meetings lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours • Contribute to at least one community call during the fellowship • Engage with fellow journalists through virtual discussions and collaborative platforms • Share reporting methodologies and lessons learned • Attend optional training sessions that support project development The Pulitzer Center emphasizes that collaboration among journalists from diverse regions and backgrounds often leads to stronger investigations and fresh perspectives on complex global issues. Part of the AI Accountability Network The AI Accountability Fellowship operates under the Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Network, an initiative launched in 2022 to strengthen and diversify public-interest journalism focused on artificial intelligence. The network is managed by Senior Editor Joanna S. Kao and Editor Karol Ilagan, with support from the Pulitzer Center’s editorial leadership team. In addition to the fellowship program, the network supports several complementary initiatives: • AI Reporting Grants for shorter-term investigative projects • The AI Spotlight Series, a free online training program for journalists and editors • The South to South AI Accountability CoLab, which connects journalists, researchers, and civil society organizations across Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia The AI Accountability Network receives support from organizations including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Humanity AI, Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation, Luminate, Omidyar Network, Park Foundation, and individual donors.
