Description

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) offers an immersive 11-week research experience for undergraduate students to advance their education and careers in STEM research. Participants will conduct research on Purdue’s West Lafayette or Indianapolis campuses under faculty, graduate student, or postdoctoral mentorship. Program Highlights: Stipend: $6,500, paid bi-weekly Housing Allowance: $2,500 for non-Purdue students; Purdue students may apply by priority deadline Mentorship: Experienced faculty and graduate student mentors Professional Development: Seminars and workshops to enhance technical and communication skills Research Symposium: Present findings at the SURF Symposium on July 30, 2026 Networking & Social Engagement: Connect with peers, professionals, and faculty Eligibility Requirements: Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate at Purdue, another U.S. institution, or an international institution Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8/4.0 Completed at least one academic semester/quarter First-time participants preferred; second-time participation possible with PI support (limited benefits) Ability to participate in most program activities Application Details: Opens: December 1, 2025 Priority Deadline: January 15, 2026 (rolling thereafter) Program Dates (Remote): May 25–31, 2026 Program Dates (In-Person): June 1–August 7, 2026 Required Documents: CV/resume, unofficial transcript, Statement of Purpose, and (for non-Purdue students) letter of recommendation Statement of Purpose: Highlight your academic motivation, research interests, relevant experiences, and how SURF will support your STEM career goals Housing & Travel: Students are responsible for securing housing; subsidy available for eligible participants Travel assistance offered for non-local students attending West Lafayette or Indianapolis Explore Research Opportunities: Connect with Purdue professors and select up to three SURF projects in your application Projects updated regularly through April 15, 2026 For full details and FAQs, visit the Purdue SURF website.
