Queen’s University Belfast has officially opened recruitment for 20 Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) under its innovative FORESIGHTERS Doctoral Training Programme, providing aspiring researchers with an opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary doctoral studies while addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges. The programme is designed to develop the next generation of research leaders by combining advanced doctoral training with future-focused thinking, innovation, and collaboration across multiple disciplines. About the FORESIGHTERS Doctoral Training Programme FORESIGHTERS, which stands for Future ORiEnted Skills, Innovation for Governance for Health, Technology, EneRgy, citieS and creativity, is a unique doctoral training initiative that promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and future-oriented research. The programme brings together researchers from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including: Engineering Humanities Social Sciences Arts and Creative Disciplines While researchers will be based within their respective academic units, they will work collectively across five interdisciplinary research themes: Health Technology Energy Future Cities Creativity The initiative seeks to create a vibrant community of researchers capable of addressing complex societal challenges through innovative thinking and collaborative approaches. Developing Future Research Leaders A distinguishing feature of the FORESIGHTERS programme is its emphasis on Futures Thinking and Futures Literacy. Participants will receive specialized training designed to help them anticipate change, explore multiple future possibilities, and develop strategies that support informed decision-making. Researchers will gain expertise in: Futures Thinking methodologies Futures Literacy frameworks Scenario planning and forecasting Creative problem-solving approaches Strategic anticipation of emerging challenges Interdisciplinary collaboration By developing these competencies, doctoral candidates will be better equipped to understand uncertainty, identify opportunities, and contribute to solutions for global issues affecting communities, industries, and governments.
