globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

April 21, 2026

Description

The Digital Innovation Fund for Energy and Climate (DIFEC) is a regional, three-year initiative designed to unlock the transformative potential of digital technologies in advancing clean energy access and strengthening climate resilience across Sub-Saharan Africa. As part of the broader REACT 2.0 Regional programme, DIFEC targets systemic barriers that limit innovation and scalability among early- and growth-stage enterprises operating in the energy and climate sectors. The programme recognizes that digital innovation is a key enabler in accelerating sustainable development. By supporting enterprises that integrate technology into energy and climate solutions, DIFEC contributes to improving livelihoods, enhancing productivity, and fostering inclusive economic growth across the region. Programme Focus and Strategic Objectives DIFEC is structured to address critical challenges faced by enterprises, including limited access to financing, insufficient technical support, and barriers to market entry and expansion. The programme aims to: Unlock investment opportunities for digital energy and climate innovations Strengthen the capacity of enterprises to scale sustainable solutions Accelerate the adoption of clean and efficient technologies Enhance climate resilience through data-driven and technology-enabled systems Support inclusive and sustainable economic growth in underserved communities The initiative places particular emphasis on supporting solutions within high-impact sectors, including: Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Clean cooking technologies Productive use of energy for businesses and agriculture E-mobility solutions Digital agriculture systems Circular economy innovations Funding Windows To effectively support enterprises at different stages of growth, DIFEC is structured into two distinct funding windows, each tailored to specific business needs and development phases. Window 1: Growing Digital Innovation Funding Window This funding window is designed to support early-stage enterprises that are in the process of developing and refining their digital solutions. The primary goal is to reduce risk and create a pathway toward commercial viability. Key objectives include: De-risking innovative digital solutions at an early stage Supporting product development and iteration Enabling pilot testing and market validation Helping enterprises demonstrate product–market fit Through this window, selected enterprises receive the necessary financial and technical support to transition from concept to a validated business model. This stage is critical in ensuring that innovations are both effective and responsive to real market needs. Window 2: Scaling Digital Innovation Funding Window This window targets growth-stage enterprises that have already demonstrated product viability and are ready to scale operations. The focus is on enabling regional expansion and strengthening long-term sustainability. Key objectives include: Accelerating regional market expansion Strengthening operational efficiency and performance Enhancing investment readiness for future funding opportunities Supporting the scaling of impactful digital solutions By focusing on scalability, this window ensures that successful innovations can reach wider populations and deliver measurable impact across multiple markets. Programme Impact DIFEC plays a critical role in advancing clean energy access and climate resilience across Sub-Saharan Africa. By supporting innovative enterprises, the programme contributes to: Increased access to affordable and reliable energy solutions Reduced environmental impact through sustainable technologies Improved livelihoods and economic opportunities Strengthened resilience to climate-related challenges Greater adoption of digital tools in traditionally underserved sectors The programme also fosters collaboration between stakeholders, including private sector actors, investors, and development partners, creating a supportive ecosystem for innovation and growth. Application and Engagement Enterprises interested in participating in the DIFEC programme are encouraged to explore the relevant funding window based on their stage of development. Each window provides tailored support designed to maximize impact and ensure long-term success. Applicants can access detailed information, eligibility criteria, and application guidelines through the programme’s official platform. About the Initiative The REACT 2.0 Regional programme, through DIFEC, reflects a commitment to leveraging innovation as a driver of sustainable development in Africa. By bridging the gap between technology and energy access, the programme supports a future where clean, affordable, and resilient solutions are accessible to all. In doing so, it not only addresses immediate energy and climate challenges but also lays the foundation for long-term transformation across the region.
