Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) is currently recruiting a Sustaining Defenders Programme Intern – Francophone, offering a remote opportunity for candidates based in Francophone African countries. About UAF-Africa Urgent Action Fund-Africa is a pan-African feminist and women’s human rights fund registered in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Operating as a virtual organization, the Fund has a presence across Africa’s five regions and is known for providing rapid-response grants to support women-led initiatives addressing urgent challenges. About the Internship The Sustaining Defenders Programme Intern will support UAF-Africa’s efforts to provide timely financial and technical assistance to women human rights defenders and organizations working to advance gender justice. The internship is expected to begin in July 2026 and will be based remotely in the selected candidate’s country of residence within Francophone Africa. This role is ideal for individuals interested in grantmaking, nonprofit management, women’s rights programming, and international development. Key Responsibilities The selected intern will contribute to several aspects of the grantmaking process, including: Grant Management Support Serving as an initial point of contact for grant applicants Acknowledging and processing grant applications Coordinating application reviews with internal teams Supporting communication with grantee partners Research and Due Diligence Conducting background research on prospective grantees Organizing online due diligence meetings Collecting and documenting relevant information for grant reviews Data Management and Administration Entering and managing data in grantmaking systems Maintaining records of applications and funding decisions Supporting database management and reporting processes Translation and Communication Translating grant requests and communications between French and English Supporting multilingual engagement with partners across the region Who Should Apply? The internship is targeted at candidates with academic backgrounds in: Social Sciences Women’s Studies Political Science International Development Law Related disciplines Applicants must be fluent in both French and English, as bilingual communication is a core requirement of the role. Required Skills and Experience Candidates should possess: One to two years of grantmaking experience Strong organizational and multitasking skills Excellent written and verbal communication abilities Understanding of women’s rights and gender equality issues Knowledge of African development and human rights contexts Ability to work effectively in remote environments Experience using Salesforce or other grantmaking software platforms will be considered an advantage.
