Description

The Secure Energy Project (SEP) is hiring a Communications Director (Digital) on a one-year contract to lead high-impact digital campaigns that build public support for the global transition to clean energy. The role is fully remote, open to candidates in Africa, the Americas, or Europe, and reports directly to the CEO. Salary ranges from USD $70,000 to $120,000, depending on location. The Communications Director will develop and implement strategies that influence public debate, strengthen coalition campaigns, and increase political support for cleaner, cheaper energy. This mid-level role combines strategic leadership with hands-on execution across digital platforms, messaging, content production, and partner collaborations. About the Secure Energy Project SEP exists to accelerate the global shift to clean energy by identifying obstacles and designing collaborative campaigns to remove them. The organization engages allies across civil society, policy, and industry to influence both narratives and politics surrounding energy. Key focus areas include: Coordinating global communications efforts and campaign coalitions Launching audience-driven interventions in key countries Countering misinformation and political backlash Promoting practical benefits of clean energy such as lower bills, better jobs, cleaner air, and stronger communities Entering its third year, SEP leverages data, storytelling, and digital engagement to help the climate movement operate smarter, faster, and collectively. Role and Responsibilities Digital Strategy Design and Experimentation Develop digital strategies that popularize clean energy and mobilize public support. Design and implement pilots, learn quickly, and scale effective tactics. Use audience insights, testing, and iteration to craft motivating messages for partners. Build platform-specific strategies, including organic and paid content. Anticipate and counter misinformation and bad-faith narratives on clean energy. Project Leadership Lead campaign projects, including planning, task assignment, delivery, and reporting. Oversee content production across messaging, visuals, and short-form video. Manage publishing and distribution across channels directly or through partners. Execute rapid-response communications during high-tempo moments. Partnering, Advising, and Coalition Work Support partners as a communications adviser and delivery partner. Participate in coalitions, convene or lead working groups where relevant. Develop practical tools, training, and support to enhance partner impact. Assist SEP’s fundraising efforts for media campaigns and digital projects. Analytics, Learning, and Impact Evidence Use polling, platform analytics, A/B testing, and creative iteration to refine campaigns. Maintain impact data to demonstrate value to partners and funders. Organisational Communications and Brand Oversee SEP’s core communications assets, including website, messaging, and fundraising materials. Ensure brand consistency across campaigns and platforms. AI and Innovation Explore and apply AI-enhanced workflows for content, testing, distribution, and audience insight. Support the team and partners in leveraging AI for digital communications. Candidate Profile Essential Skills and Experience 5+ years in digital communications/media, including 3+ years in strategic and delivery roles. Proven success designing and delivering campaigns, products, or movement strategies. Experience managing people, agencies, or freelancers to execute digital-first campaigns. Expertise in social platforms, online narratives, and public engagement strategies. Skilled in producing and optimizing short-form video for TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts. Ability to build and manage a creator or influencer ecosystem. Strong written and verbal communication, with ability to translate complex issues into clear narratives. Experience using analytics and monitoring tools to measure and improve performance. Project management capabilities across multiple campaigns or regions. Familiarity with AI tools for communications and willingness to train others. Desirable Skills and Experience Experience in energy transition or climate communications (preferred but not required). Knowledge of paid media, community growth, or creator partnerships. Traditional media experience, crisis communications, or brand management. Budget management experience and multi-regional campaign coordination. Personal Qualities Strategic yet hands-on, flexible, and low ego. Comfortable in fast-moving, startup-like environments with evolving processes. Entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on scalable digital solutions.
