globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

January 1, 2026

Description

Overview of the Seeding the Future Global Food System Challenge The Seeding the Future Global Food System Challenge is an annual international innovation competition designed to accelerate transformative solutions that address some of the most pressing challenges affecting global food systems. Hosted by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and funded by the Seeding The Future Foundation (STF), the Challenge supports breakthrough ideas capable of promoting sustainable, equitable, and nutritious food systems, with a significant focus on needs within the Global South. Eligible innovators are encouraged to apply by 15 December 2025. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Challenge recognises that global food systems face mounting pressures, including climate change, food price fluctuations, resource inefficiencies, malnutrition, and unequal access to safe and nutritious food. Through targeted funding and global visibility, the programme aims to catalyse solutions that benefit vulnerable populations and strengthen resilience within agricultural and food systems worldwide. Innovation Focus Area The Challenge seeks innovations positioned at the intersection of three critical domains, collectively known as the Innovation Focus Area: Safe and Nutritious Food: Solutions that increase access to foods essential for a healthy diet, improve food safety, and enhance nutritional outcomes. Sustainable and Regenerative Practices: Innovations that reduce food loss and waste, protect ecosystems, and promote sustainable or regenerative farming and production systems that operate within planetary boundaries. Equitable Access to Affordable and Trusted Food: Initiatives that ensure individuals and communities—particularly those in underserved regions—can access appealing, culturally appropriate, and fairly priced food. Solutions that operate within this intersection have the potential to drive meaningful, system-wide transformation impacting food availability, affordability, and environmental sustainability. Award Levels The Challenge offers three tiers of awards designed to support innovations at different stages of development. These awards provide essential resources—including financial support, visibility, and capacity-building—to help innovators refine, scale, or deploy their solutions in real-world contexts. Awards vary depending on the maturity, feasibility, and potential impact of the proposed innovation. Who Can Apply The Challenge encourages participation from a wide range of organisations committed to solving food system challenges. Eligible applicants include: Non-profit organisations and NGOs worldwide Academic institutions and research centres Early-stage or emerging for-profit enterprises Social enterprises operating in any country Applications from organisations based in countries under comprehensive sanctions by the United States and/or Germany are not eligible. Individuals may not apply independently; however, student or researcher teams may participate under an eligible organisation’s submission. Organisations are encouraged to collaborate and assemble multidisciplinary teams. If multiple organisations form a consortium, one must serve as the formal applicant. Application and Selection Process Applicants must submit their innovations through the official application platform. Submissions are evaluated based on innovation quality, feasibility, scalability, sustainability, and potential for long-term impact. The vetting process includes: Eligibility screening Technical evaluation Impact assessment Review by an independent panel of experts Only complete applications are considered. Certain details—such as team composition, organisational background, project concept, implementation strategy, and expected outcomes—must be included in the application. Finalists and awardees are selected based on overall merit and alignment with the Challenge’s objectives. All applicants will be informed whether their submissions have been accepted or declined. Applications are treated confidentially and are not shared beyond the evaluation process. Terms and Conditions Award funding is disbursed according to established programme guidelines. Funds must be used exclusively for project development, testing, scaling, or implementation activities aligned with the approved innovation plan. Awardees may reapply in future cycles, provided they continue to meet eligibility criteria. Applicants may submit multiple concepts, but each submission must be distinct and must comply with all application rules. Submissions can be withdrawn before the deadline if necessary. Why Welthungerhilfe Is Involved Welthungerhilfe’s commitment to ending global hunger aligns closely with the Challenge’s mission. As one of the largest private humanitarian organisations in Germany, WHH brings extensive expertise in food security, sustainable agriculture, and global development. By hosting the Challenge, WHH leverages its networks, technical capacity, and global footprint to elevate solutions capable of strengthening food systems in the world’s most vulnerable regions. Additional Information More details on eligibility criteria, application guidelines, award conditions, FAQs, and past winners are available on the official Challenge webpage. Interested organisations are encouraged to review all supporting documents to ensure strong and complete submissions.
