The SELA Fellowship is designed around precisely that idea. Built in Africa and for Africa, SELA is a sustainability leadership pathway created to support Africans at different stages of their professional journeys—from early-career professionals and emerging changemakers to mid-career leaders and C-suite executives. With a presence spanning 34 countries, three leadership pathways and more than 240 alumni leaders, SELA is building a growing community of professionals working to address Africa’s most pressing sustainability challenges. Rather than focusing solely on classroom learning, the fellowship combines practical training, mentorship, networking, implementation support and access to a growing African sustainability community. For professionals passionate about climate action, renewable energy, agriculture, waste management, environmental sustainability, social impact and climate finance, SELA could provide a structured pathway for turning ambition into measurable action. A Fellowship Designed for Africa’s Sustainability Future Africa is facing an increasingly urgent set of sustainability challenges. From climate change and environmental degradation to food systems, renewable energy, waste management and access to climate finance, the continent needs leaders capable of developing solutions that respond to local realities. Yet having a good idea is rarely enough. Successful sustainability initiatives require people who understand how to develop projects, mobilise resources, engage stakeholders, access funding, build organisations and scale interventions. This is the gap SELA seeks to address. The fellowship’s central proposition is straightforward: Africa already has people developing solutions. What they often need is the leadership infrastructure to turn those solutions into sustainable impact. SELA therefore focuses on developing leaders who can move beyond ideas and build initiatives capable of creating lasting change. More Than a Traditional Fellowship One of the most distinctive aspects of SELA is its emphasis on supporting participants across different career stages. Many leadership programmes concentrate either on students and young graduates or on established executives. SELA takes a broader approach by creating pathways that can accommodate people at different points in their professional development. Its model is structured around three stages: Learn Participants engage with sustainability experts through live learning sessions designed to strengthen their knowledge, leadership capabilities and understanding of sustainability challenges. The programme also creates opportunities for participants to interact with other changemakers working across Africa. This peer-learning element can be particularly valuable because sustainability challenges rarely exist within a single sector. A climate professional may benefit from understanding entrepreneurship. An environmental advocate may need stronger project-management skills. A social-impact founder may require greater knowledge of funding and organisational development. SELA’s community approach creates space for these different perspectives to intersect. Launch Knowledge becomes more valuable when it can be applied. SELA supports participants with practical skills for managing social-impact projects, structuring organisations and exploring pathways to funding. Participants can also access one-to-one mentorship and guidance through the SELA Leadership Lab, providing an opportunity to receive more targeted support as they develop their leadership and impact ambitions. This practical component helps distinguish the programme from opportunities that rely predominantly on lectures or theoretical coursework. Scale The ultimate objective is impact. SELA encourages fellows to move from learning and planning towards implementing projects. Participants receive hands-on guidance as they work towards implementing their first project, allowing them to test their ideas and translate leadership development into practical action. This creates an important progression: Learn → Launch → Implement → Scale. For aspiring sustainability leaders, that journey can be more valuable than simply adding another certificate to a CV. Who Can Benefit From SELA? SELA may be particularly relevant to Africans working or aspiring to work in areas such as: Climate change and climate action Renewable energy Environmental sustainability Agriculture and food systems Waste management and circular economy Climate finance Social impact Sustainable development Environmental advocacy Community development Sustainability entrepreneurship Youth-led climate initiatives The programme is also potentially relevant to professionals considering a transition into sustainability. Someone who has developed expertise in communications, project management, research, business, development, advocacy or another field may be able to use SELA as a bridge into sustainability leadership. A Growing Pan-African Network Leadership development becomes significantly more powerful when it is combined with community. SELA provides fellows with access to a growing alumni network that spans African countries. The programme currently highlights more than 240 alumni leaders across 34 countries, creating opportunities for participants to connect with people working on sustainability challenges in different contexts. The experiences shared by previous fellows illustrate the potential value of this network. Nimota Ogunyemi, a Cohort 1 fellow from Nigeria, describes how the programme supported the development of Climate Alpa, an initiative that reached more than 12,000 young people through climate programmes. Another alumna, Favour Okpor from Nigeria, highlights how the fellowship challenged her thinking and contributed to the development of multiple impact projects. From Zambia, Phiri Bright describes the fellowship as instrumental in expanding his network and strengthening his organisation’s work addressing climate and environmental challenges. These experiences demonstrate an important feature of SELA: participants are not simply expected to consume knowledge; they are encouraged to use it to create solutions. Why This Opportunity Stands Out For Africans interested in sustainability careers, one of the biggest challenges can be knowing what to do next. There are countless online courses, conferences, webinars and reports on climate change and sustainability. However, access to information does not automatically translate into leadership capability. SELA attempts to provide the missing structure. Instead of asking participants to navigate sustainability leadership independently, the fellowship combines: Training + Mentorship + Community + Practical Experience + Project Implementation. That combination can help participants move from passive learning to active leadership. It is particularly compelling for individuals who already have an idea, initiative or organisation but need additional skills, guidance and networks to take it further. Built in Africa, for Africa Perhaps the strongest proposition behind SELA is its philosophy. The programme is based on the premise that African sustainability challenges require African-led solutions. That does not mean operating in isolation from the international sustainability community. Rather, it recognises the importance of strengthening local leadership, expertise and networks so that Africans can play a central role in shaping the continent’s sustainability future. This approach is increasingly important as countries across Africa pursue transitions in energy, agriculture, infrastructure, finance and environmental management. The leaders capable of navigating these transitions will need more than technical knowledge. They will need vision, adaptability, networks, practical experience and the ability to mobilise people and resources around solutions. An Opportunity to Move From Passion to Action For anyone passionate about sustainability but unsure how to transform that passion into a career, project or scalable initiative, SELA offers a compelling proposition. It provides a pathway for participants to develop their skills, connect with mentors and peers, implement projects and become part of a wider community of African sustainability leaders. The opportunity is therefore not simply about becoming a fellow. It is about asking a bigger question: What sustainability problem can you help solve—and what would you need to turn your solution into lasting impact? For aspiring climate leaders, social entrepreneurs, environmental advocates, development professionals and sustainability practitioners across Africa, SELA could be a significant step towards answering that question.
