Application Deadline

August 1, 2026

Description

The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) has opened applications for a Climate Finance Researcher position within its Climate and Natural Resources Programme, based in Cape Town, South Africa. The role forms part of the organisation’s ongoing work on climate finance, climate diplomacy, energy policy, and just transition pathways across the African continent. The position is offered on a contract basis with an annual salary range of ZAR 600,000 to ZAR 750,000. Applications are open until 7 July 2026 at 21:59, with the organisation seeking candidates with strong research backgrounds and practical experience in climate-related policy and finance. About the Role The Climate Finance Researcher will contribute to SAIIA’s portfolio of projects focused on climate adaptation finance, mitigation strategies, and loss and damage frameworks, with a particular emphasis on just transition initiatives and country-level climate platforms. The role involves a combination of desk-based research and fieldwork, requiring the ability to analyse complex policy environments and translate findings into accessible research outputs. The successful candidate will support ongoing project delivery while also contributing to stakeholder engagement and fundraising activities. In addition to research responsibilities, the position includes supporting the Programme Head in identifying funding opportunities, preparing proposals, and engaging with donors to secure future project financing. The researcher will also play a role in disseminating findings through presentations, events, media engagement, and digital communication channels. Key Responsibilities The researcher will be expected to contribute to multiple aspects of programme delivery, including producing written analysis, coordinating project activities, and presenting research findings to diverse audiences. They will also assist in organising workshops and events aimed at strengthening dialogue between policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in the climate finance ecosystem. A core component of the role involves monitoring developments in global and regional climate finance systems, including emerging issues related to adaptation funding, mitigation finance flows, and loss and damage mechanisms. The researcher will also conduct stakeholder mapping and maintain engagement with relevant actors across Africa and beyond. Fundraising support is another key responsibility, requiring the identification of funding opportunities and assistance in proposal development to expand the programme’s research impact. Required Qualifications and Experience Applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as climate finance, political science, political economy, economics, climate policy, or energy policy. A minimum of three to five years of professional experience in related research or policy work is required. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, particularly the ability to produce high-quality policy research and analytical outputs. Experience in fundraising or proposal development is considered an advantage. The role also requires familiarity with African regional policy landscapes and established networks within climate finance or related fields. The ability to work collaboratively across teams and engage effectively with stakeholders is considered a key competency. Organisational Context The South African Institute of International Affairs is an independent policy research organisation with a long-standing focus on Africa’s international relations, governance, and economic development. For over 90 years, the institute has contributed to shaping debates on Africa’s role in global policy systems and continues to engage actively in research and dialogue on sustainable development and international cooperation. Within this context, the Climate Finance Researcher role supports SAIIA’s broader mission of promoting well-governed, economically sustainable, and globally connected development pathways across the continent, with particular attention to climate resilience and energy transitions. Application Process Interested candidates are required to submit a combined CV and cover letter outlining their suitability for the role, with emphasis on relevant climate finance research experience. Applications must be submitted through the SAIIA website before the closing date. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The organisation notes that preference may be given to South African citizens and candidates who contribute to employment equity considerations.
