Speculative Technologies is inviting applications for the 2027 Brains Fellowship, a four-month programme designed for technically skilled researchers and scientists with ambitious ideas that could benefit from new forms of coordinated research. The fellowship provides participants with training, mentorship, professional networks and a supportive community to help transform promising research ideas into coordinated research programmes. These may take the form of programmes within government research agencies, established nonprofits or new focused research organisations. The 2027 cohort will run from January to May 2027, with applications closing on October 26, 2026. About the Brains Fellowship Brains was created to establish a clearer pathway for scientists who want to lead ambitious research programmes beyond the traditional academic laboratory or startup model. Many large-scale scientific initiatives require individuals who can combine deep technical expertise with programme management, fundraising, collaboration and strategic decision-making. Brains helps fellows develop these capabilities and turn early-stage ideas into practical programmes capable of attracting funders, collaborators and potential employers. The programme is particularly suited to researchers interested in coordinated research organisations, government Advanced Research Projects Agency-style programmes, focused research organisations and other unconventional approaches to scientific research. What the Fellowship Provides Brains fellows receive intensive training focused on developing their research ideas into viable coordinated programmes. Participants learn how to determine the appropriate scope and ambition of their projects and communicate their ideas effectively to potential funders, collaborators and end-users. Each fellow receives one-on-one mentorship from experienced professionals with backgrounds at organisations such as DARPA, ARPA-E and other coordinated research institutions. Mentors work closely with fellows to refine ideas and develop practical strategies for execution and impact. Fellows also gain access to a network of funders, partners, peers, alumni and experienced research leaders. This network can help participants identify funding opportunities, potential collaborators, employment pathways and organisational resources. Programme Format and Benefits The Brains Fellowship is a remote, part-time programme lasting approximately four months. Participants are expected to commit around 10 hours per week. The programme is bookended by two in-person events: a two-day kickoff workshop and an end-of-programme Brains Showcase. At the showcase, fellows present their developed ideas to an audience that may include potential funders and employers. The programme has a cohort size of 16 fellows and is open to applicants from any scientific field. There is no cost to participate, and Brains does not take equity from fellows. Travel expenses for the kickoff workshop and showcase will also be reimbursed. What Fellows Do During the programme, fellows meet regularly with their mentors to address challenges associated with developing their proposed research programmes. They spend several hours each week developing their ideas and preparing a written brief and presentation. Participants also take part in small-group sessions with other fellows and attend closed-door discussions featuring founders of focused research organisations, leaders from Advanced Research Projects Agencies and philanthropists. This combination of individual mentorship, practical development and peer engagement is intended to help fellows move from ambitious concepts toward executable research programmes. Eligibility and Ideal Candidates Brains is particularly interested in applicants with a deep technical background, including individuals with a Ph.D. or equivalent Ph.D.-level research experience and several years of professional experience. Ideal candidates are expected to have one or more ambitious ideas that do not fit comfortably within existing institutions. Applicants who have experience both inside and outside academia are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates should demonstrate a strong bias toward action, comfort with uncertainty and an interest in pursuing their ideas through a new professional role or by establishing a new organisation. The programme notes that there can be exceptions to these general criteria, particularly for candidates working at the frontiers of scientific and technological capabilities. Application Process The application primarily consists of six short-answer questions about the applicant’s proposed idea. The questions are loosely based on the DARPA Heilmeier Catechism, which encourages applicants to clearly explain the problem, proposed approach, expected impact and key uncertainties surrounding their idea. Applications for the 2027 cohort opened on October 5, 2026, and close on October 26, 2026. Prospective applicants can also attend online information sessions scheduled for October 14 and October 20, 2026. Participants receive practical programme-building skills, experienced mentorship, access to influential networks and opportunities to present their ideas to potential funders and employers. The fellowship can therefore be particularly valuable for researchers seeking to establish focused research organisations, join government research programmes or develop ambitious projects that require resources and collaboration beyond a conventional laboratory.
