Eligible Research Areas The fellowship supports research across a broad range of natural science disciplines. Applicants must select one primary research area during the application process from the following fields: Astronomy and Astrophysics Biological Sciences Experimental Chemistry, including Chemical Biology Earth and Oceans, including Ecology Mathematics and Statistics Experimental Physics Theory and Simulation Interdisciplinary proposals are strongly encouraged, and applications may be reviewed by faculty across multiple research areas when appropriate. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements by the start of the fellowship: Hold a PhD awarded within the previous three years. Have no more than two years of prior postdoctoral experience at another institution. Conduct research primarily within the natural sciences. Demonstrate an exceptional record of scientific achievement and strong potential for independent research. International applicants are fully eligible to apply. In most cases, selected fellows must qualify for a J-1 visa, although an F-1 extension may be appropriate in certain circumstances. Applicants requiring an H-1B employment visa are not eligible. Current Stanford graduate students, Stanford postdoctoral researchers and individuals affiliated with Stanford in either paid or unpaid positions during the selection process are not eligible. Prospective postdocs beginning Stanford appointments before 1 March 2027 are also ineligible. Cover letter. Three letters of recommendation, including one from the PhD advisor where possible. Career statement (maximum two pages). Research statement (maximum two pages, plus one optional reference page). The career statement should describe the applicant’s career goals, relevant experience and how they would contribute to the Stanford Science Fellows community. The research statement should clearly address: The scientific problem being investigated. Expected achievements over a three- to five-year period. How Stanford’s research environment will enable the proposed work. Applicants are encouraged to identify and contact potential Stanford faculty hosts before applying. A fellowship cannot be awarded until at least one faculty member agrees to host the applicant. Selection Process Applications are reviewed by a committee of Stanford faculty representing departments across the natural sciences. Each application is evaluated by multiple reviewers, with interdisciplinary proposals receiving additional cross-disciplinary consideration when appropriate. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in Zoom interviews, with most interviews taking place during the first two weeks of December 2026. Selection is based on scientific excellence, originality, research potential and the applicant’s ability to contribute to Stanford’s collaborative research community. Fellowship Terms Appointments last three years, typically beginning on 1 September 2027, although start dates of 1 July or 1 August may also be possible.
