Overview The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is recruiting a Researcher for the Sahel/West Africa Programme (SWAP), part of SIPRI’s Conflict, Peace and Security research cluster. The role has a strong quantitative focus and is ideal for candidates with expertise in survey design, sampling methodologies, and statistical analysis. The SWAP conducts mixed-method research on conflict dynamics, peacebuilding, governance, and security across the Sahel and West Africa, collaborating with African civil society organisations, academic institutions, international NGOs, and other partners. Projects are funded by the EU, UN agencies, and government donors. Key Responsibilities Research Design and Data Collection Develop research methodologies and sampling strategies for surveys and perception studies. Code questionnaires using Kobo Toolbox or ODK. Train and support data collection teams, ensuring high-quality field operations. Manage data collection and maintain data integrity and quality standards. Data Analysis and Visualisation Conduct statistical analyses using R or Stata. Contribute to data visualisation using QGIS, Tableau, or Power BI. Maintain SWAP’s databases and documentation processes. Research Outputs and Knowledge Sharing Contribute to reports, policy briefs, articles, and high-quality research outputs. Support proposal development and fundraising efforts. Mentor junior staff, including research assistants and interns. Collaborate with other SIPRI programmes as relevant. Ethics and Compliance Ensure adherence to ethical standards and data protection requirements during research and analysis. Participate in fieldwork, dissemination activities, and partner meetings, primarily in Africa, according to SIPRI’s safety assessments. Candidate Profile SIPRI is seeking a researcher who: Demonstrates strong quantitative research skills and enjoys methodological work. Works effectively in multicultural and international research teams. Communicates clearly in both written and verbal formats. Is motivated to contribute to evidence-based research supporting peace and security. Is willing to travel within the Sahel region, subject to security considerations. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in social sciences, statistics, econometrics, or related fields. Proven experience in quantitative research. Expertise in sampling methodologies and research design. Experience coding surveys with Kobo Toolbox or ODK. Excellent skills in data analysis using R or Stata. Fluency in French and English (spoken and written). Knowledge of conflict, governance, and security issues in the Sahel/West Africa. Desirable Skills Experience with QGIS, Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualisation tools. Fieldwork experience in West Africa or the Sahel.
