Application deadline: 31 January 2026 The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) invites applications for the 2026 Early Career Research Fellowships. This programme supports emerging researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) whose work contributes to strengthening the evidence base on the intersection of violence against women (VAW) and violence against children (VAC). The fellowships aim to promote high-quality, policy-relevant research that informs prevention and response strategies in LMIC contexts. Eligibility Criteria Applicants are eligible to apply if they meet all of the following requirements: Are a national of a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) Are enrolled full-time at an in-person, accredited academic or research institution based in an LMIC Are undertaking PhD dissertation research or postdoctoral research focused on the intersection of VAW and VAC Demonstrate the ability to complete the proposed research within the fellowship period Additional requirements by applicant category PhD applicants must: Have a defended or institutionally approved dissertation proposal at the time of application Postdoctoral applicants: May apply even if they have not formally started a postdoctoral position Must identify: A host institution based in an LMIC A potential advisor or supervisor Must provide a letter of support confirming: The institution’s willingness to host the fellow Adequate capacity to support the proposed research Ineligible Applicants Applicants are not eligible if they: Are enrolled in a university or research institution based in a high-income country, even if they are nationals of an LMIC Are not conducting research directly related to the intersection of violence against women and violence against children Are unable to demonstrate institutional affiliation or supervision within an LMIC What Is Meant by the “Intersection of VAW and VAC”? SVRI defines the intersection of violence against women and violence against children as research that examines overlapping, interconnected, or co-occurring forms of violence affecting women and children. Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to: Shared risk and protective factors influencing both VAW and VAC Co-occurrence of intimate partner violence and child maltreatment within households or communities Intergenerational cycles of violence, including how exposure to violence in childhood influences later victimisation or perpetration Integrated prevention or response strategies that address both VAW and VAC simultaneously Policy, programme, or systems-level approaches designed to reduce multiple forms of violence in LMIC contexts Proposals should demonstrate: Conceptual clarity Methodological rigour Strong relevance to LMIC settings Potential to inform policy, practice, or advocacy Fellowship Availability For the 2026 funding cycle, SVRI will award: Four Early Career Research Fellowships, comprising: Two fellowships for doctoral candidates Two fellowships for postdoctoral researchers This structure ensures balanced support for researchers at different early career stages while promoting diversity and regional representation. Fellowship Value and Duration The fellowships provide financial support for a period of up to two years, depending on the scope and timeline of the proposed research. PhD Fellowship Up to USD 17,000 per year For a maximum of two years Postdoctoral Fellowship Up to USD 20,500 per year For a maximum of two years Funding may be used to support research-related costs and enable fellows to dedicate sustained time to their research activities.
