globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

October 1, 2026

Description

The Teach For India Fellowship offers an opportunity for individuals who want to build careers with purpose while contributing to educational equity in India. The two-year, full-time programme places Fellows in underserved classrooms, where they work as teachers and develop practical leadership skills while supporting students from low-income communities. The Fellowship is designed not only as a teaching experience but also as a pathway to long-term leadership. Fellows gain exposure to education, community engagement, programme management, stakeholder collaboration and social impact. Following the programme, participants can pursue opportunities in higher education, purpose-driven corporate roles, government initiatives or social entrepreneurship. Where Fellows Will Teach Selected Fellows are placed as full-time teachers in English-medium government or affordable private schools serving communities with limited resources. Placements are available across nine Indian cities: Ahmedabad Bengaluru Chennai Delhi Gurugram Hyderabad Kolkata Mumbai Pune Fellows are generally assigned to Grade 1–10 classrooms and may teach between 40 and 80 students. Depending on the school and placement, a Fellow may serve as a class teacher responsible for multiple subjects or as a subject teacher specialising in areas such as English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Science. What the Fellowship Involves The Teach For India Fellowship combines classroom teaching with structured professional and leadership development. The journey begins with residential training, where Fellows develop the knowledge, skills and mindsets required to become effective and innovative educators. After training, Fellows are placed in schools serving students from low-income communities. They take responsibility for their classrooms while learning to understand the wider social and educational challenges affecting their students. Throughout the programme, Fellows reflect on their experiences and receive support from peers and Programme Managers. This combination of practical teaching, mentoring and reflection helps participants develop their ability to work effectively in challenging environments. After completing the first year, Fellows can undertake a summer internship that provides an opportunity to explore another dimension of educational equity. This can help participants broaden their understanding of the education sector and identify areas of interest for future career development. During the second year, Fellows continue teaching while taking part in additional leadership and career-development activities. Through the Be The Change project, participants develop entrepreneurial and problem-solving skills. They can also engage with a career fair designed to connect them with opportunities aligned with their professional interests and personal purpose. Leadership and Career Development A central feature of the Fellowship is its focus on leadership. Fellows develop practical competencies including stakeholder management, planning, execution, envisioning and reflection. These skills can be valuable across education, development, government, business and the nonprofit sector. The programme also provides a pathway for Fellows who want to continue making an impact after completing their two-year placement. Alumni have opportunities to pursue advanced degrees at leading universities, work in purpose-driven corporate positions, collaborate with government initiatives or establish organisations addressing social challenges. Fellowship Benefits The Teach For India Fellowship can provide participants with significant professional and personal development opportunities. Fellows gain hands-on classroom experience while developing transferable leadership and problem-solving skills. Key opportunities include: Two years of full-time teaching and leadership experience. Residential training before classroom placement. Professional guidance from Programme Managers and peers. Exposure to educational equity and social-impact work. A potential summer internship after the first year. Participation in the Be The Change project during the second year. Access to career-development and networking opportunities. Membership in a large Teach For India alumni community. Preparation for careers in education, government, business and social impact. A potential pathway towards advanced study and further leadership opportunities. Who Should Consider the Fellowship? The Fellowship is suited to individuals who are passionate about education, leadership and social change and are prepared to work directly with students in underserved communities. Candidates should be willing to commit to a demanding two-year teaching and leadership experience and demonstrate the motivation to learn, adapt and work collaboratively. Because Fellows work with children and are responsible for classroom learning, successful participants are expected to approach the role with professionalism, empathy, accountability and a strong commitment to student development.
