About the Role Tearfund is seeking an experienced Translations Editor for French to join its Communication for Development team. This role is central to ensuring the accuracy, quality and timely delivery of French-language translations, with a strong focus on audiences across Francophone Africa. The editor will oversee translation workflows for a diverse range of materials, including publications, training resources, digital content and multimedia outputs. Working closely with a network of freelance translators and proofreaders, the postholder will coordinate assignments, ensure consistency with organisational standards and maintain high editorial quality across all translated products. In addition, the role contributes to strengthening Tearfund’s translation practices, with responsibilities that include refining internal standards, supporting digital translation processes and helping optimise the use of translation management software and AI tools. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate brings native-level French proficiency coupled with strong written and spoken English. They will have proven experience in translation or proofreading between English and French, ideally with knowledge of CAT tools. A background in managing translation projects and collaborating with freelance linguists is essential. Because Tearfund’s work spans a wide range of linguistic and cultural environments, a deep understanding of the linguistic nuances and cultural dynamics of Francophone Africa is highly valued. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, strong editorial judgement and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. Experience working within faith-based organisations, familiarity with theological materials or an understanding of ethical considerations in AI-assisted translation will be considered an advantage. All applicants must be committed to Tearfund’s Christian beliefs. Why This Role Matters This position offers a unique opportunity to influence and shape Tearfund’s multilingual communication efforts. The Translations Editor will help ensure that learning resources, training materials and development insights are accessible to French-speaking partners and communities around the world. By supporting a global network of freelance translators and contributing to streamlined translation systems, the editor will play a vital role in strengthening the organisation’s ability to share knowledge effectively. The role sits within the Communications for Development (C4D) team, which supports Tearfund and its partners in developing inclusive and impactful communication approaches. Through improved translation processes and high-quality editorial oversight, the postholder will help extend the reach and impact of Tearfund’s work across diverse regions. Key Responsibilities Managing translation workflows from initial request to final delivery Coordinating a network of translators and proofreaders Ensuring linguistic accuracy, cultural relevance and editorial consistency Supporting the use and development of translation management systems and AI tools Upholding Tearfund’s translation standards and contributing to quality assurance processes Liaising with internal teams to understand content needs and timelines Location and Working Arrangements This role can be based in any country where Tearfund is registered and legally able to employ staff. The position is full time, with a market-related salary determined by the applicant’s location. Commitment to Inclusion and Safeguarding Tearfund encourages applications from people with disabilities and from individuals from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic backgrounds within the UK workforce, recognising that these groups are currently under-represented within the organisation. The recruitment process includes safeguarding-specific checks, and personal identification information will be screened against a Watchlist database as a counter-terrorism measure. Why join us – This is an exciting opportunity to shape Tearfund’s multilingual communication and support a global community of freelance translators who help make our resources accessible worldwide.
