Call for Consultant: African Futures Website Editor The African Futures & Innovation (AFI) programme at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is inviting qualified English-language editors to apply for a consultancy position focused on refining, shaping, and maintaining content for the African Futures website. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact futures analysis and forecasting across Africa, helping ensure that the website’s insights remain accessible, engaging, and analytically rigorous. About the African Futures & Innovation Programme AFI produces forward-looking analysis that helps policymakers, researchers, and the public understand Africa’s long-term development trajectories. Through thematic analyses and country-specific forecasts, the programme provides evidence-based insights on demographic shifts, economic growth, governance trends, security challenges, and more. Ensuring that these insights are communicated clearly and compellingly is essential making the website editor an integral part of the team. Scope of Services Required The website editor will work across two major content streams: thematic reports and geographic reports. 1. Thematic Component AFI produces forecasts and analytical updates across 19 thematic areas. Approximately two themes undergo updates each year. The editor will refine new and revised thematic reports, helping improve logic, flow, clarity, and readability. This includes suggesting structural changes—such as additions, cuts, and reorganization—while maintaining fidelity to the underlying analysis. 2. Geographic Component The geographic section of the website models prospects for: All African countries Regional groupings Regional economic communities World Bank income groups New or updated geographic reports are produced at a maximum rate of one per month, following a standardized template that links narrative text to accompanying charts. The editor will enhance these reports to ensure they are coherent, accessible, and engaging for non-expert readers. All new or revised reports are edited offline in Google Docs. Once edits are completed, final uploads to the website are handled by an external contractor. Ongoing Review of Existing Content In addition to handling new material, the editor will conduct a continuous quality review of existing thematic and geographic reports. This includes minor corrections and updates directly within the Content Management System (CMS). The expected workload is two reports per month, and training on the open-access CMS will be provided at the start of the consultancy. Workload and Expectations AFI will identify monthly priorities, and the editor is expected to commit approximately 2–3 days per week. Work intensity may vary, as the programme’s output schedule does not follow a rigid monthly cycle. Clarity and accessibility are central to this role. All website content must: Be logically structured Communicate analysis effectively Avoid overly academic or technical language Appeal to general audiences and non-specialists Contract Timeline The consultancy will begin with an initial three-month contract. Following a successful initial period, the contract may be extended to cover the remainder of 2026. Management and Reporting The selected consultant will report directly to a designated team member within the AFI programme. Collaboration, responsiveness, and reliability will form the basis of a productive working relationship.
