The Environmental and Economic Resource Centre (EERC) is an international research-based non-governmental organisation dedicated to advancing inclusive agriculture, sustainable livelihoods, environmental management, and natural resource conservation across Africa. Through applied research, capacity building and partnerships with global and local institutions, EERC designs scalable, evidence-based solutions that contribute to poverty reduction, food security, ecosystem health and climate resilience. EERC is currently inviting applications for two strategic positions: Technical Lead and Climate Change Specialist. Both roles require highly skilled professionals with strong research capacity, technical expertise, and the ability to influence policy and development practice across Africa. TECHNICAL LEAD About the Position The Technical Lead will serve as EERC’s principal research and technical advisor, offering strategic direction and oversight across the organisation’s agricultural, environmental, climate change and sustainable livelihoods portfolios. This senior position requires a dynamic, multidisciplinary expert capable of shaping research design, ensuring scientific rigor, mentoring research teams, leading publications, and cultivating partnerships with donors, academic institutions and development organisations. Key Duties and Responsibilities The Technical Lead will:• Provide strategic and technical leadership ensuring innovation, scientific excellence and policy relevance across all research programmes.• Lead the design, implementation and supervision of research projects, including methodological design, data analysis and dissemination.• Oversee quality assurance processes for all research outputs, reports and publications.• Identify funding opportunities and lead the development of competitive research proposals.• Serve as a key liaison with donors, government agencies, universities, and development partners.• Guide the use of advanced data analysis tools including SPSS, STATA, R and QGIS.• Mentor junior researchers and strengthen institutional research capacity.• Contribute to policy dialogue, conferences, workshops and stakeholder engagements.• Support strategic planning and annual work plan development for EERC’s research agenda.• Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. Minimum Qualifications and Experience (Eligibility Criteria) Education Requirements:• PhD in Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Resource Economics or a closely related field. Experience Requirements:• 8–10 years of progressive experience in research, project leadership or technical advisory roles.• Demonstrated expertise in at least two EERC thematic areas: agriculture, climate change, environment, sustainable livelihoods or natural resource management.• Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.• Proven leadership of multidisciplinary teams and proposal development.• Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and statistical software (SPSS, STATA, R, QGIS).• Experience working with governments, donors, private sector and civil society across Africa.• Excellent scientific writing and communication skills. Evaluation Factors Factor 1: Leadership and Management Skills (40%)• Ability to lead teams, manage complex projects and integrate diverse research disciplines.• Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to deliver results with minimal supervision.• Proven mentoring and team development capacity. Factor 2: Technical Knowledge and Expertise (40%)• Advanced understanding of agricultural, environmental and economic development issues.• Strong record of research publications and policy advisory experience.• Technical expertise in data analysis, economic modelling and environmental valuation. Factor 3: Communication and Representation Skills (20%)• Strong scientific writing and grant development skills.• Ability to represent EERC at high-level engagements with donors and partners.• Fluency in English; additional languages advantageous. CLIMATE CHANGE SPECIALIST About the Position The Climate Change Specialist will lead climate adaptation and resilience mainstreaming across EERC programmes, providing strategic technical expertise, operational guidance and high-level advisory support. The role involves advancing evidence-based climate research, supporting the EERC Carbon Market Study, strengthening partnerships with government and private sector actors, and building community-level capacity for climate-smart enterprise development. Key Duties and Responsibilities The Climate Change Specialist will:• Lead climate-related research linked to EERC’s thematic areas and support GHG reduction initiatives through sustainable land use and improved forest management.• Develop competitive concept notes and proposals aligned to donor priorities.• Provide technical input to the EERC Carbon Market Study, including GHG accounting and assessment of carbon market mechanisms.• Develop frameworks and strategies to integrate climate adaptation and mitigation across EERC programmes.• Identify emerging trends in climate-smart agriculture and natural resource management.• Strengthen local participation by working with communities and institutions to design context-appropriate solutions.• Engage government agencies, partners and international organisations for resource mobilisation and advocacy.• Build partnerships with private sector actors to advance climate-smart enterprise development.• Lead capacity development programmes for researchers, farmers, CSOs and government officials.• Mentor EERC interns, fellows and volunteers in climate change-related work. Minimum Qualifications and Experience (Eligibility Criteria) Education Requirements:• Master’s degree in Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Economics, Agricultural Sciences, Climatology, Forestry or a closely related field. Experience Requirements:• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in development or research sectors.• At least 3 years providing high-level advisory services on donor-funded projects in Nigeria.• Experience in climate finance, GHG accounting or carbon market development desirable.• Strong field research skills and ability to translate findings into policy recommendations.• Excellent communication skills and ability to represent EERC at national and international levels.• Fluency in English is required. Evaluation Factors Factor 1: Knowledge and Competencies• Expertise in climate risk assessment, adaptation planning and mitigation strategies.• Strong understanding of agricultural land use, livelihoods and environmental conservation. Factor 2: Skills and Abilities• Technical knowledge in climate finance, GHG methodologies and carbon market operations.• Ability to conduct field research and design actionable policy solutions. Factor 3: Communication and Language Skills• Strong writing, presentation and advocacy skills.• Ability to produce high-quality technical reports and policy briefs.
