The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is a pan-African non-governmental organisation established in 1992 to advance girls’ and women’s education across sub-Saharan Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, FAWE operates through national chapters in over 30 countries, working closely with governments, policymakers, and development partners to promote gender-responsive education systems. As part of strengthening its communication and advocacy strategy, FAWE is launching FAWE Studio, a podcast and multimedia platform aimed at amplifying conversations on education, showcasing programme impact, and engaging stakeholders across Africa. Purpose of the Consultancy The consultancy seeks to deliver a fully operational podcast studio and build FAWE’s internal capacity for multimedia production. The selected consultant or firm will provide a complete turnkey solution, covering design, equipment supply, installation, system configuration, and staff training. The initiative is intended to enable FAWE to produce high-quality podcast and digital content that supports advocacy, storytelling, and knowledge sharing. Objectives of the Assignment The consultancy is structured around key objectives that ensure both infrastructure development and skills transfer: Design and establish a fully functional podcast studio Convert a shipping container into a professional recording space Supply and install podcast and multimedia production equipment Configure and test audio-visual systems Train staff in podcast production and storytelling Develop operational systems for sustainable studio management Scope of Work Studio Design, Supply and Installation The consultant will deliver a complete container-based podcast studio solution. Responsibilities include: Supplying a 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container Designing and converting the container into a recording studio Completing interior finishing and studio configuration Minimum specifications: Structural setup with insulation, flooring, ceiling, and weatherproofing Acoustic treatment with soundproofing and noise reduction materials Electrical installation including wiring, sockets, and lighting Climate control through ventilation or air conditioning Interior setup with recording table, seating, and branded backdrop Supply and Installation of Equipment The consultant will provide and configure all essential podcast production tools, ensuring compatibility across systems. Equipment includes: Video recording devices (e.g., smartphones) Tripods and stabilisation tools Professional microphones (lapel and boom) Audio interface or mixer Studio lighting equipment Recording and editing software Data storage and backup systems All equipment must be tested to ensure professional-grade output. Capacity Building and Training A core component of the consultancy is skills development. The consultant will conduct practical training sessions covering: Podcast concept development Interviewing and hosting techniques Audio and video recording methods Editing and post-production workflows Publishing on streaming platforms Content repurposing for digital and social media Training will include hands-on exercises and pilot recordings to ensure practical learning. Development of Podcast Production Manual The consultant will develop a comprehensive manual to guide FAWE’s ongoing studio operations. The manual will include: Equipment setup and usage Recording procedures Editing workflows Publishing and distribution processes Content management and archiving Troubleshooting guidelines Post-Installation Technical Support Following installation, the consultant will provide technical support during the initial operational phase. This ensures FAWE staff can independently manage the studio and maintain production quality. Deliverables The consultancy is expected to produce the following outputs: Fully converted and operational container-based podcast studio Installed and configured podcast production equipment Tested and functional recording system Training sessions for staff and interns At least three pilot podcast recordings Podcast Production Manual Final consultancy report Duration and Timeline The assignment will span approximately 30 working days over six weeks, structured as follows: Week 1: Initial briefing and planning Weeks 2–3: Container supply and studio conversion Week 4: Equipment installation and system configuration Week 5: Staff training and pilot recordings Week 6: Documentation and final handover Qualifications and Experience The ideal consultant or firm should demonstrate: Minimum of five years’ experience in multimedia or podcast production Proven track record in setting up podcast or media studios Experience in container-based studio design and installation Strong technical expertise in audio and video systems Experience in training and capacity building Prior engagement with NGOs or development organisations (advantageous) Reporting and Supervision The consultant will report to the Senior Communications Officer and collaborate with the FAWE Communications Team. Oversight will be provided by the Deputy Executive Director and Head of Programmes to ensure alignment with organisational goals.
