The International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) Invite Applications for the 5th IAFFE Feminist Economics School 2027 in Japan
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 9, 2026

Description

The International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) is inviting applications for the 5th IAFFE Feminist Economics School 2027, a specialised learning programme designed for individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of feminist economics, its methodologies, and its policy applications. The school will take place from 29 June to 1 July 2027 at Okayama University in Okayama, Japan. The programme is particularly relevant to professionals, researchers, activists, and social movement participants who have had limited access to formal training in feminist economics. Applications from individuals based in the Global South and members of historically discriminated groups worldwide are especially encouraged. The school will provide an opportunity to explore feminist economic thought through interactive workshops, collaborative learning, and discussions grounded in participants’ professional, academic, and lived experiences. Overview of the IAFFE Feminist Economics School 2027 Programme: 5th IAFFE Feminist Economics School Organiser: International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE) Location: Okayama University, Okayama, Japan School dates: 29 June–1 July 2027 IAFFE Pre-Conference: 1 July 2027 IAFFE Annual Conference: 2–4 July 2027 Application deadline: 10 December 2026 Decision notification: By early February 2027 Participation fee: No participation fee Funding: Travel grants available for selected participants Selected participants should plan to attend the full school, the relevant Pre-Conference activities, and the IAFFE Annual Conference, amounting to approximately six days of participation. What Is the Feminist Economics School? The IAFFE Feminist Economics School is an intensive educational programme focused on feminist approaches to economic theory, research, and public policy. Its workshops are designed to help participants build a solid foundation in feminist economics while critically examining how economic systems, institutions, and policies affect people differently. The programme runs for two and a half days and emphasises participatory learning, group discussions, and the exchange of professional and personal experiences. Participants are expected to engage actively with the material and contribute to a collaborative learning environment. The school takes place immediately before the IAFFE Annual Conference, allowing participants to connect their learning with wider academic and professional discussions on feminist economics. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet at least one of the following eligibility requirements: Have a minimum of five years of professional work, activism, or social movement experience in areas related to feminist economics; or Have completed at least three years of advanced graduate studies in a field related to feminist economics. The programme is intended for individuals who already have meaningful engagement with feminist economics through their work, activism, research, or studies. It is not primarily designed as an introductory opportunity for applicants with no prior connection to the field. Applicants from the Global South and historically discriminated groups worldwide are particularly encouraged to apply. A solid command of English is required because participants must be able to engage in workshops, understand discussions, and exchange ideas with other participants. Benefits of Participating The school offers participants an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of feminist economics without paying a participation fee. Potential benefits include: Specialised training: Develop a stronger understanding of feminist economic thought, methodologies, and policy applications. Interactive learning: Participate in workshops and collaborative discussions with peers. Professional networking: Connect with researchers, activists, professionals, and other individuals working on related issues. Conference participation: Engage with the wider feminist economics community through the IAFFE Pre-Conference and Annual Conference. Travel support: Apply for available travel grants to help cover transportation costs. Travel grants are available to selected participants, but funding is not guaranteed for every applicant. Applicants should clearly state their estimated travel funding requirements in the application form. Participation and Attendance Expectations Applicants should be prepared to commit fully to the programme. Attendance is expected throughout the two-and-a-half-day school, the relevant Pre-Conference activities, and the IAFFE Annual Conference. The organisers emphasise that learning will continue outside formal sessions through interaction with fellow participants. Applicants should therefore be willing to participate in the wider community experience. Successful applicants are also expected to engage openly with participatory and group-based learning methods, follow community and safety protocols, and remain focused during the school sessions. Applicants who require accessibility accommodations are encouraged to communicate their needs in advance so the organisers can explore appropriate support. How to Apply for the IAFFE Feminist Economics School 2027 Applicants should complete the official application form and provide accurate information in every required section. Incomplete applications will not be considered. A confirmation email should be received after submission. The application requests the following information: Personal details, including country of origin and residence, gender identity, and relevant information about marginalised-group membership. English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Employment, organisational affiliation, educational qualifications, field of study, and previous economics training. A statement of purpose explaining the applicant’s connection to feminist economics, learning objectives, relevant experience, and reasons for applying. Funding requirements, estimated travel costs in US dollars, accommodation-related information, disability or accessibility needs, and visa requirements. Information about IAFFE membership, possible conference presentation submissions, and how the applicant learned about the school. The statement of purpose must not exceed 3,000 characters. Applicants should directly address all four questions in the form and demonstrate their existing engagement with feminist economics, the value they would gain from the programme, and the knowledge or experience they could contribute. How to Strengthen an Application Applicants should prepare a focused statement of purpose that connects their current work, activism, or academic research to feminist economics. Concrete examples of relevant experience are more persuasive than general expressions of interest. They should explain what they hope to learn, how the school would strengthen their work, and what perspectives or skills they could share with the group. Applicants seeking travel funding should provide a realistic estimate of their transportation costs and complete the relevant funding questions carefully. Before submitting, applicants should review every section, check the consistency of their information, and ensure that their statement remains within the character limit. Important Dates and Contact Information Application deadline: 10 December 2026. No extensions will be granted. Decision notification: By early February 2027. Feminist Economics School: 29 June–1 July 2027. IAFFE Annual Conference: 2–4 July 2027. For questions about the programme or application process, contact Mayra Gonçalves at conference@iaffe.org. Apply for the IAFFE Feminist Economics School 2027 Eligible professionals, researchers, activists, and graduate students with a meaningful connection to feminist economics are encouraged to prepare their applications before the deadline. VISIT THE OFFICIAL IAFFE APPLICATION FORM TO APPLY Applicants who are unsure whether they need a visa to travel to Japan should consult the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official List of Countries and Regions for Visa Exemption.
