The International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs), in collaboration with the School of Marxism at Tsinghua University, is hosting an advanced workshop for students, research scholars, and early-career academics focused on macroeconomic futures and development alternatives in a rapidly transforming global economy. The workshop will be held in Beijing from 17–18 August 2026, with an extended application deadline of 14 April 2026. This initiative seeks to address the structural shifts affecting the world economy, including the impact of unregulated finance and the effects of changing global power dynamics, such as the United States’ withdrawal from multilateralism under the Trump administration. Participants will explore how these transformations affect low- and middle-income countries, particularly regarding neoliberal economic policies, climate change, and global financial volatility. Workshop Objectives The workshop aims to provide participants with a platform to: Analyse global macroeconomic shifts and their structural causes Examine the economic consequences for low- and middle-income countries Discuss emerging development alternatives and strategies for adaptation Propose new approaches to cope with global economic transformations Sessions will be conducted in English, with no simultaneous translation, ensuring a cohesive and immersive academic experience. Follow-up International Conference Selected participants of the workshop will be invited to attend an International Conference on “Towards a New Multilateralism: Development Cooperation in a World Without Hegemons,” taking place from 19–21 August 2026. This conference will expand discussions from the workshop, offering opportunities for networking, collaboration, and policy-oriented research. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements: Completed post-graduate studies in economics Candidates with post-graduate qualifications in other social science disciplines with a strong interest in macroeconomics and development studies are also welcome Demonstrated academic ability and a keen interest in development alternatives and international economic policy Application Requirements Applicants must submit the following documents through the online application form: Official transcripts or mark sheets for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees A statement of purpose (up to 500 words) detailing academic background, interests, and motivation for participating in the workshop One letter of recommendation from a teacher, academic supervisor, or professional supervisor, certifying English language proficiency and confirming availability to attend the workshop if selected Travel and Accommodation IDEAs will cover travel costs and provide full local hospitality for six nights. Accommodation will be available from 16 August (check-in) to 22 August (check-out), ensuring participants can fully engage in all workshop activities and the subsequent international conference. Selection Process Notifications of selection will be sent by 15 April 2026 Candidates must confirm acceptance of the offer by 30 April 2026 Selection will be based on academic merit, relevance of research interests, and potential contribution to workshop discussions About IDEAs International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs) is a global, progressive network of economists focused on critical research, teaching, and dissemination of development policy analysis. The network prioritizes South-led perspectives, pluralist methodologies, and solutions-oriented research to address the economic and social challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries.
