globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

July 25, 2026

Description

London, United Kingdom – June 2026 — The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) has announced a vacancy for a Research Analyst within its Conflict, Security and Development Programme (CSDP), offering an opportunity for early-career researchers to contribute to high-impact analysis on global security, conflict dynamics, and geopolitical risk. The position is based in the institute’s London office and is offered on a fixed-term one-year contract, full-time basis. The role forms part of IISS’s broader research mission to deliver independent, evidence-based analysis to governments, policymakers, and the private sector on pressing strategic challenges. Leading Global Security and Strategic Research The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading defence and security think tanks, with a strong focus on international relations, geopolitics, and conflict analysis. Through its Conflict, Security and Development Programme, the institute produces research on armed conflict, security transitions, and political economy factors shaping instability. The new Research Analyst will contribute directly to these outputs, supporting both publication and policy engagement activities. Core Responsibilities in Conflict and Security Research According to the vacancy announcement, the Research Analyst will play an active role in supporting the production of the annual Armed Conflict Survey, one of IISS’s flagship publications. Responsibilities include contributing to written chapters, producing blog content, and assisting in the dissemination of research findings across academic, policy, and media platforms. The role also involves supporting senior researchers on thematic areas related to conflict, security, and development. The successful candidate will collaborate on co-authored publications, contribute to concept development for research projects, and assist in drafting funding proposals to support future research initiatives. Engagement with Policy, Media, and Events The role extends beyond academic research, incorporating engagement with communications teams and external stakeholders. The Research Analyst will assist in preparing materials for media interviews and contribute to public dissemination of research findings. In addition, the position includes logistical and intellectual support for the organisation of internal and external events. This may involve coordinating speakers, managing event logistics, and conducting background research on relevant thematic issues. The role reflects IISS’s emphasis on bridging academic research with real-world policy impact through dialogue, publication, and stakeholder engagement. Academic and Professional Requirements Candidates are expected to hold a Master’s degree in political economy, international relations, security studies, development studies, or a closely related discipline. The institute is seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in policy-relevant research, particularly in areas such as conflict analysis, security studies, geopolitical risk, or political economy. Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills are required, including experience working with datasets on conflict and humanitarian indicators, conducting interviews, and performing desk-based research. Excellent written and spoken English is essential, while fluency in French is considered an advantage. Experience or interest in Sub-Saharan Africa and its conflict dynamics is also desirable, reflecting one of the programme’s key regional focus areas. Research in Conflict, Development, and Geo-Economics The Conflict, Security and Development Programme explores the intersections between armed conflict, governance, economic systems, and geopolitical change. The Research Analyst will contribute to this multidisciplinary agenda by supporting evidence-based analysis and producing research outputs for academic and policy audiences. The institute’s work aims to inform governments, international organisations, and private sector stakeholders on emerging risks and strategic developments in global security environments. Employment Package and Benefits The IISS offers a comprehensive employment package, including life assurance, private medical insurance, a health cashback plan, season ticket loans, cycle-to-work schemes, and a contributory pension scheme. These benefits are designed to support staff wellbeing while encouraging long-term professional development within the organisation’s global research network. Application Process and Deadline Applicants are required to submit a cover letter outlining their relevant skills and experience, along with a full curriculum vitae. The closing date for applications is 15 July 2026. Candidates must have eligibility to work in the United Kingdom, as visa sponsorship is not available for this role. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to participate in an in-person interview at their nearest IISS office. Career Opportunity in Strategic Research The Research Analyst position at IISS represents a significant opportunity for emerging researchers seeking to work at the intersection of conflict analysis, policy research, and international security studies. With its global reach and strong policy influence, IISS continues to play a central role in shaping understanding of security challenges worldwide, making this role particularly attractive for candidates aiming to build careers in strategic research and international affairs.
