The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of South Africa’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, has opened applications for its 2026 International Bursary Programme. The initiative supports eligible South African students pursuing postgraduate Film and Television studies abroad. The NFVF is mandated to promote the equitable growth and sustainability of the South African film and video industry. It achieves this through funding for development, production, marketing, distribution, research, and professional training. The international bursary programme forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen industry capacity and global competitiveness. Purpose of the International Bursary Programme The bursary programme aims to: Upskill South African film and television professionals Build advanced technical and creative capacity Enhance global competitiveness in the film and television sector Support postgraduate studies not available at South African institutions The programme provides financial assistance to qualifying applicants pursuing full-time postgraduate studies overseas in specialised areas of film and television. Funding Value and Coverage Bursaries for the 2026 academic year will be: Capped at R280,000 Inclusive of tuition fees and living expenses Funding is intended to support studies commencing in September or October 2026. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet all the following requirements: Apply at least six (6) months before the course commencement date Be a South African citizen or permanent resident Have a strong academic record Demonstrate proven financial need Be accepted or enrolled at an accredited overseas tertiary institution Enrol in a full-time postgraduate Film or Television programme Apply for a course that is not available in South Africa Have a course start date in September/October 2026 Important Exclusion Live performance and acting courses do not qualify for this bursary. Applicants must also submit a detailed written motivation explaining why they should be awarded the bursary, along with all required supporting documentation specified in the online application form. Application Timeline Call Opens: 09 February 2026 Call Closes: 09 March 2026 at 17h00 (CAT) Late applications will not be considered under any circumstances. Application Process All applications must be submitted online through the NFVF Grant Management System. Applicants are required to: Register on the online portal Complete the application form in full Upload all mandatory supporting documents Submit before the official closing date Incomplete or missing documentation will result in automatic disqualification. Applicants are also advised to consult the official NFVF Funding Policy before submitting their application.
