The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is seeking an experienced communications and storytelling professional to serve as its Strategic Content and Storytelling Manager – Africa Region. The role offers an opportunity for an accomplished writer, editor, journalist or multimedia storyteller to help shape how conservation work across Africa is communicated to global audiences, donors, partners and communities. The successful candidate will lead TNC Africa Region’s content vision, editorial strategy and storytelling agenda, transforming complex conservation, scientific and community-based work into compelling narratives that demonstrate impact and encourage action. The position can be based in Kenya, Tanzania, Gabon, Zambia, South Africa or Angola, where TNC has offices. Strategic Content and Storytelling Manager – Africa Region The Strategic Content and Storytelling Manager will serve as a senior content leader within TNC’s Africa Marketing and Communications team. Reporting to the Director, Marketing & Communications – Africa, the position will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic approach to storytelling across the region. The role combines editorial leadership, journalism, content strategy, multimedia production and audience engagement. The successful candidate will work closely with conservation, science, policy, philanthropy, country and communications teams to identify stories that demonstrate conservation impact and strengthen TNC’s relationships with important stakeholders. A central part of the position will involve translating complicated scientific and conservation information into clear, engaging and memorable stories that can connect with different audiences. Key Responsibilities The manager will develop and own the Africa content and storytelling strategy, ensuring that it reflects regional priorities, conservation objectives, philanthropic goals and TNC’s brand standards. The position will establish an editorial vision and annual storytelling roadmap covering priority themes, audiences and opportunities across Africa. It will also maintain a consistent pipeline of high-impact stories throughout the year. As the region’s lead storyteller, writer and editor, the successful candidate will identify, research and develop stories involving landscapes, communities, Indigenous Peoples, conservation practitioners, scientists, donors, partners and staff. The manager will produce a wide range of content, including feature stories, long-form articles, case studies, donor stories, scripts, blogs and impact reports. Interviewing and firsthand reporting will be important tools for developing authentic, evidence-based narratives. The position will also oversee multimedia storytelling projects, including photography, video, audio and other digital content. This may involve travelling to field sites to gather stories, conduct interviews and support content production. The manager will collaborate with photographers, videographers, designers, editors, creative agencies and other production partners to develop high-quality storytelling assets. Audience Engagement and Content Performance Beyond creating content, the successful candidate will be expected to understand how audiences respond to different stories and formats. The role includes monitoring content performance through audience insights, analytics and engagement metrics. The manager will evaluate storytelling effectiveness and recommend improvements based on audience behaviour and performance data. These insights will help TNC strengthen audience engagement, donor relationships, partnerships and organisational visibility. The position will also provide editorial guidance to colleagues across the Africa region and work with internal and external contributors to review and strengthen content. Who Can Apply? TNC is seeking an experienced communications professional with exceptional writing, editing, interviewing and narrative development skills. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, English or a related field, together with substantial relevant professional experience. The organisation’s desired qualifications include eight or more years of professional experience in content strategy, editorial leadership, journalism, storytelling, publishing or multimedia content development. Experience in conservation, environmental protection, development, sustainability or nonprofit organisations is particularly relevant. A background in journalism, documentary storytelling or editorial publishing is also desirable. Candidates should have a strong portfolio demonstrating impactful storytelling and editorial leadership, as well as experience producing content for donor, philanthropic and partnership audiences. Experience working across multiple African countries and cultures, direct field reporting, stakeholder interviews, ethical storytelling and inclusive narrative practices will also be valuable. Excellent project management and relationship-building skills are required because the position involves managing multiple content initiatives and collaborating across countries, functions, cultures and time zones. Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Work Location and Travel The position may be based in a TNC office in Kenya, Tanzania, Gabon, Zambia, South Africa or Angola. The role has an indicative 20% travel requirement, reflecting the importance of field reporting and direct engagement with conservation teams, communities and partners. Candidates must also hold a valid driver’s licence and comply with TNC’s Auto Safety Program when driving for organisational purposes.
