The NRF and the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation invite applications for the 2027 NRF-FREF Black Academics Advancement Programme(BAAP)
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

April 11, 2026

Description

The NRF-FREF:BAAP program supports well-structured research projects that demonstrate clear objectives, sound methodology, and prudent use of funds. The selection of successful candidates is guided by four core allocation principles: Equity and Redress Only South African citizens employed full-time at South African public universities are eligible. The program prioritizes equity targets: 90% African applicants and 10% Indian, Coloured, or persons with disabilities. At least 55% of grants are reserved for female applicants. Commitment to Excellence Only scientifically sound proposals with favorable independent merit reviews will be considered. Despite a developmental focus, quality and rigor remain essential. Achievability Research proposals must be realistic in terms of objectives, required resources, and projected completion timelines. HOD Nomination and Candidate Motivation Applications must include a nomination letter from the Head of Department (HOD) or equivalent. Applicants must submit a detailed self-motivation explaining their academic and research career plans, as well as intended outcomes. Application Process The NRF issues an annual Call for Proposals for NRF-FREF:BAAP, accompanied by a detailed application and funding guide. Applicants may apply for funding under two tracks: PhD Track For applicants registered or intending to register for a PhD degree. Grant durations vary: three-year full grants, one- or two-year completion grants, six-month near-completion grants, or a combination of PhD and post-PhD research training. Post-PhD Track For applicants pursuing post-PhD research training, including international research or industry experience. Grants are typically one to two years in duration. Application Requirements Each application must include two key components: HOD Nomination A letter signed by the HOD outlining: Reasons for nominating the candidate. Alignment with university research and staffing plans. Details of any strategic partnerships with other universities. Confirmation of release from teaching and administrative responsibilities. Joint university and clinical appointments are eligible if the university commits to full research focus during the grant period. Applicant Self-Motivation A detailed personal motivation explaining the applicant’s academic and research career plan. Intended outcomes and benefits of the NRF-FREF:BAAP grant must be clearly outlined. Eligibility Criteria General Eligibility: Must be Black South African citizens or South African citizens with a disability. Must hold a permanent or fixed-term full-time academic appointment at a South African public university. Applicants must not hold an active NRF A, B, C, or P rating, although those receiving a Y-rating may continue the grant. Grants cannot be held concurrently with Thuthuka, nGAP, SARChI, NRF Thematic grants, or similar programs. PhD Track Eligibility: Registered or intending to register for a PhD in any discipline. Applicants should generally be under 45 years old; exceptions require motivation. Proposed research projects must have supervisor support. Post-PhD Track Eligibility: Applicants should generally be under 45 years old; exceptions require motivation. PhD must have been completed within five years of application. Ethical Clearance: All research must comply with South African or foreign laws and institutional ethical standards. Ethical approval must cover human and animal subjects, copyright, and intellectual property regulations. Proposal Screening and Review Proposals undergo institutional and NRF screening before peer review. The review assesses scientific merit and alignment with program objectives. Applications must include: Project Schedule / Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Detailed activities with time-bound outcomes for each year. Project Budget Detailed, justified costs demonstrating efficient use of funds. Research Outputs Targeted conferences and publications in credible peer-reviewed journals. Applicants progressing from PhD to post-PhD must include a comprehensive plan for both stages. Gantt charts or similar scheduling tools are encouraged. A selection committee, including NRF and FREF representatives, will make final grant award decisions based on review recommendations and budget assessments, ensuring compliance with NRF auditing requirements. Summary The NRF-FREF:BAAP program is a strategic initiative to support the development of high-quality research and academic careers among South African scholars. By combining rigorous evaluation, equity-focused allocation, and structured mentorship, the program ensures the next generation of researchers can contribute meaningfully to scientific and societal advancement.
