Organization: Organization of American StatesLocation: Washington D.C., United StatesContract Type: Long-Term (12 months, renewable)Grade: P05Salary: USD 103,165 + Post Adjustment USD 56,328 Role Overview The Director position at the Organization of American States represents a senior leadership role within the Department Against Transnational Organized Crime. This position is designed to deliver strategic impact by leading initiatives that combat organized crime across the Americas. The role involves advising senior leadership, including the Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General, while overseeing the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs addressing complex security challenges. The Director is responsible for ensuring alignment with OAS mandates and fostering international cooperation to strengthen justice systems and promote regional security. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership and Advisory Advise senior leadership on transnational organized crime issues Develop and implement strategic policies, work plans, and operational frameworks Represent the organization in high-level international and regional forums Programme Development and Implementation Lead the planning and execution of departmental programs and projects Mobilize financial and technical resources from member states and partners Ensure effective delivery of services and alignment with organizational priorities Partnerships and Collaboration Build and maintain partnerships with governments, NGOs, and international organizations Collaborate with entities such as United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to provide technical assistance Promote cooperation in addressing issues like drug trafficking, human trafficking, and money laundering Operational Management Oversee departmental operations, including budget management and personnel allocation Approve expenditures and monitor program performance Ensure efficient use of resources and adherence to best practices Technical and Policy Leadership Support implementation of international frameworks, including the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime Provide technical secretariat services to political and policy forums Develop innovative approaches to address emerging security challenges People Management Lead and mentor professional and support staff Conduct performance evaluations and support staff development Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment Qualifications and Experience Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree with at least 15 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree with 10 years of experience OR Doctorate with 6 years of experience Fields include criminology, law, international law, political science, or related disciplines Demonstrated leadership and managerial experience Desirable Experience within international or regional organizations Familiarity with OAS mandates and priorities Skills and Competencies Strategic planning and decision-making abilities Strong leadership and staff management skills Excellent communication and presentation skills Analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities Ability to build partnerships and manage stakeholder relationships High level of professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion Language Requirements Proficiency in at least two official languages of the OAS: English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish Candidates must pass language proficiency examinations Knowledge of additional official languages is an advantage Benefits and Compensation Salary Package: Basic salary plus post adjustment (tax-free for non-US citizens) Annual Leave: Starting at 21 days, increasing to 30 days within five years Health Insurance: OAS covers two-thirds of premiums Pension Plan: 14% employer contribution; 7% employee contribution Additional Benefits: Life insurance Mobility and repatriation allowances Home leave travel Dependency allowances Sick leave and parental leave Organizational Values The Organization of American States is committed to: Diversity, equity, and inclusion Gender equality and geographic representation Professional integrity and accountability Collaboration and knowledge sharing Conclusion The Director role within the Department Against Transnational Organized Crime offers a unique opportunity for experienced professionals to influence regional and global security policy.
