SEI Africa: Research Internship Opportunities (Environment and Development) The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Africa is offering research internship opportunities for postgraduate students and recent graduates who are interested in environment, sustainability, and development in Africa. This internship programme is part of SEI’s long-term capacity-building efforts and is designed for motivated individuals seeking hands-on experience in research, policy engagement, and applied environmental work. About SEI Africa SEI Africa serves as a regional hub for the Stockholm Environment Institute’s work across the African continent. The centre actively collaborates with research institutions, policymakers, and development partners to address pressing environmental and development challenges. SEI Africa’s work focuses on five core areas: Energy and climate change Natural resources and ecosystems Health and environment Sustainable urbanization Communications and science-policy engagement What the Internship Offers Interns at SEI Africa gain exposure to a wide range of environmental and development issues through: Research and analytical work Engagement in science–policy processes Participation in ongoing projects and, where applicable, fieldwork Training and mentoring within a professional research environment The programme provides insight into SEI’s applied research approach and helps interns develop skills relevant to academic, policy, and development careers. Internship Period Two internship intakes each year: January to June July to December Duration: 6 months Possible extension: One additional 6-month period, based on performance and organizational needs Timing exceptions may be considered based on discussions with SEI research teams Internship Types Internships are flexible and designed around two main models: Applicant-Initiated Internships Based on the intern’s own research idea Must align with SEI’s thematic focus May include work toward a master’s thesis Project-Based Internships Defined tasks within SEI Africa’s ongoing projects Focused on applied research, analysis, or communications Who Can Apply The internship is open to individuals seeking practical experience in the environment and development sector. Applicants should clearly state: Their research or professional interests Their preferred SEI Africa work area Eligibility and Preferred Profile Applicants should meet the following criteria: Hold a master’s degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant master’s programme Demonstrate interest in at least one SEI Africa work area Be available for a minimum internship period of six months Have fluency in spoken and written English Additional languages, especially French or Portuguese, are an advantage Priority consideration is given to candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa.
