The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is inviting applications for an Intern – Inclusive Growth position in its South Africa Country Office. The internship is based in Pretoria, South Africa, and provides an opportunity for an emerging professional to gain practical experience in inclusive economic transformation, sustainable development, programme management, research, stakeholder engagement and SDG monitoring. The successful intern will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager for Inclusive Economy and Governance and will contribute to initiatives aligned with UNDP’s South Africa Country Programme Document (CPD) 2026–2030. About the Inclusive Growth Programme UNDP South Africa works with the Government of South Africa to advance national development priorities under the National Development Plan 2030, the Medium-Term Development Plan 2024–2029, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The Inclusive Economy and Governance portfolio addresses interconnected challenges such as poverty, unemployment and inequality, while also supporting responses to climate risks, governance constraints, fiscal pressures and the transition towards more inclusive digital and green economies. The portfolio places particular emphasis on micro, small and medium enterprises, township and rural enterprise ecosystems, youth and women’s economic participation, skills development, green and digital industrialisation, employment creation and improved access to opportunities for marginalised communities. Key Responsibilities The Intern will support the planning, implementation, administration, monitoring and knowledge management of programmes and projects under the Inclusive Economy and Governance portfolio. Key responsibilities will include: Supporting the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes contributing to the CPD 2026–2030. Collecting and analysing socio-economic data related to inclusive economic transformation, employment and sustainable livelihoods. Supporting research on development trends and policy priorities in South Africa. Contributing to strategies and monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, UNSDCF and CPD priorities. Researching potential partners and identifying funding opportunities. Assisting with the preparation of concept notes aligned with portfolio priorities. Supporting stakeholder engagement, coordination and partnership activities. Assisting with the planning and organisation of meetings, conferences and other events. Preparing meeting minutes and supporting follow-up activities. Developing communication and knowledge management products that document programme results and lessons learned. Assisting with the preparation and drafting of official documents. Performing other duties related to the Inclusive Economy and Governance portfolio as required. Learning and Professional Development The internship is intended to strengthen the successful candidate’s understanding of UNDP’s mandate and its contribution to national development. It will also provide practical exposure to programme and project management, research and analysis, official writing, stakeholder coordination and SDG advocacy and monitoring. Because the portfolio covers a broad range of development issues, the Intern should be adaptable and comfortable handling different assignments, working with diverse stakeholders and responding positively to new challenges. Eligibility and Education Requirements Applicants should hold at least a first degree in economics, development studies, social sciences or another relevant discipline. An advanced degree is preferred. Previous professional experience is an asset but is not required, making the opportunity particularly relevant to graduates and early-career candidates seeking practical exposure to international development. Computer literacy is also essential, including proficiency in standard applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
