This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking international research that seeks to advance fair, feasible, and effective pathways to a climate-resilient future. The post is part of ACCLIMATE – Accelerating Climate Action: Navigating Towards a Low-Emissions, Climate-Resilient Future, a major international research initiative funded by Horizon Europe. The project brings together a global consortium of leading institutions from Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Its central aim is to strengthen national and international climate strategies in line with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Senior Research Associate will play a central role in shaping evidence-based approaches that ensure climate action is both effective and socially just. The Role at University of Bristol The appointed researcher will join Work Package 2 of the ACCLIMATE project, focusing on evaluating the adequacy, feasibility, and fairness of national climate commitments and policies. This component is pivotal to assessing whether global climate strategies align with principles of equity and climate justice while remaining achievable and ambitious. Working under the guidance of Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, a leading scholar in global climate governance and environmental justice, the postholder will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team comprising political scientists, economists, engineers, modellers, and legal scholars. The role offers significant scope for intellectual leadership and collaboration in shaping global climate discourse. Key Responsibilities The Senior Research Associate will contribute across multiple dimensions of the ACCLIMATE project, including: Research and Analysis Conducting qualitative research and policy analysis on national and international climate policies. Assessing the fairness, feasibility, and ambition of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Contributing to the design and implementation of comparative policy studies across partner countries. Synthesizing data and insights to produce evidence-based policy recommendations that advance equitable climate transitions. Scholarly Outputs and Engagement Producing high-impact academic publications, policy briefs, and technical reports for the European Commission and international stakeholders. Presenting research findings at international conferences, consortium meetings, and stakeholder workshops. Supporting the translation of academic research into actionable policy insights to influence decision-makers at multiple levels. Project Coordination and Support Assisting with project coordination, monitoring research progress, and maintaining compliance with ethical and data governance standards. Organising consultations and workshops with partners and stakeholders. Supporting internal communication, reporting, and dissemination activities across the international research network. This role combines rigorous academic research with real-world policy engagement—offering the opportunity to help shape global climate action through collaborative, interdisciplinary inquiry. Candidate Profile The University of Bristol seeks a candidate with a strong academic foundation, proven research capability, and passion for socially just climate solutions. Essential Qualifications and Experience A postgraduate research degree (PhD) or equivalent professional experience in political science, public policy, environmental governance, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated expertise in climate policy, climate justice, or sustainability transitions. Strong command of qualitative research methods and policy analysis techniques. Proven ability to produce high-quality research outputs, including academic articles, reports, or policy papers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences. Experience working in interdisciplinary, international teams. Desirable Attributes Familiarity with climate governance frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. A track record of engagement with policymakers, NGOs, or international organisations. Motivation to contribute to inclusive, equitable, and evidence-based approaches to climate action.
