The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is inviting applications for a traineeship within its Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU). Based at UNITAR Headquarters in Geneva, this four- to six-month in-person traineeship offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a multicultural environment while deepening their understanding of multilateral diplomacy and the United Nations system. The position is open under vacancy reference TR/2025/016, with the application deadline set for 30 November 2025. About the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit The MDPU is responsible for designing and delivering UNITAR’s core diplomacy training (CDT), benefitting approximately 2,500 diplomats every year. This training includes: Orientation briefings Short, intensive diplomatic skills workshops Sessions delivered at UN Headquarters and other key global locations Beyond CDT, the Unit provides: Country- and regional-level capacity-building programmes e-Learning courses and digital training tools Advisory services for diplomatic academies Specialised projects and training publications Through its Master Programmes, delivered in partnership with academic institutions worldwide, the MDPU supports students, diplomats, government officials, UN staff, and professionals seeking to expand their expertise in international affairs and multilateral diplomacy. The traineeship is unpaid; however, trainees receive a 900 CHF monthly stipend to offset transportation and miscellaneous expenses. Background of the Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy As part of UNITAR’s commitment to strengthening the quality, accessibility and relevance of its training activities, the MDPU has launched several Master Programmes, including the Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy. This programme offers a flexible academic pathway for individuals pursuing careers in: International relations Multilateral diplomacy Regional and global governance Government and non-governmental organisations The programme combines academic knowledge with practical diplomatic skills, attracting a diverse global audience. Responsibilities of the Trainee Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the trainee will contribute to the design, implementation and management of the Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy and related qualifications. Key responsibilities include: Supporting the preparation, design and delivery of the Master Programme and related qualifications Adapting online training materials to meet academic and quality standards Assisting with the admissions process Liaising with partner institutions and programme beneficiaries Conducting research to support curriculum development and training activities Assisting with outreach and communications efforts, including community engagement strategies Tasks may evolve during the traineeship in line with programme needs and UNITAR priorities. Learning Objectives By the end of the traineeship, the participant is expected to: Translate strategic vision into practical, actionable objectives Demonstrate independence and initiative in task execution Build professional relationships with UNITAR staff and UN partners Propose innovative approaches to advance UNITAR’s mission Work effectively within a multicultural and multilingual environment Dates and Duration Start Date: December 2025 or January 2026 (exact date to be confirmed with the selected candidate) Duration: Four to six months, full-time Part-time arrangements may be considered if agreed upon before the start of the traineeship Minimum Requirements Eligibility Criteria Applicants must: Be enrolled in or have recently completed an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree in: International relations Political science Education History Law Languages Or a related field Begin the traineeship within two years of graduation Skills and Competencies Candidates should demonstrate: Clear and concise writing skills in English Strong analytical and research abilities Attention to detail and organisational capacity Familiarity with e-Learning tools and digital platforms Proficiency in standard computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet research) Motivation to work with training methodologies, instructional design, and monitoring and evaluation Languages A high standard of spoken and written English is required Native English proficiency is an advantage Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is considered an asset How to Apply Applicants must submit their application and a motivation letter as early as possible and well before the deadline of 30 November 2025.
