Tree Aid is an international charity working at the intersection of poverty reduction and climate action. The organisation partners with communities across the drylands of Africa to grow and protect trees so people can sustainably live from them for generations. Since 1987, Tree Aid has supported the planting and regeneration of more than 32 million trees and worked alongside over 1.8 million people to restore degraded land, strengthen livelihoods and build resilience to climate change. As Tree Aid enters a new and ambitious phase, it continues to expand its leadership in high-integrity, community-centred forest carbon initiatives. The organisation made global history as the first to register an afforestation, reforestation and revegetation (ARR) project under Verra’s VM0047 methodology. Building on this milestone, Tree Aid is now developing a pipeline of innovative nature-based solutions (NbS) projects that aim to redefine equity, transparency and impact within voluntary carbon markets across Africa. The Opportunity Tree Aid is recruiting a Nature-based Solutions & Carbon Manager to help lead this next chapter. This full-time, permanent role is based in the United Kingdom, with location negotiable. It offers a rare opportunity to combine advanced technical expertise with strategic influence over how carbon finance delivers tangible benefits for rural communities. The role will be central to the design and delivery of high-integrity carbon projects across Tree Aid’s six countries of intervention: Burkina Faso Ethiopia Ghana Mali Niger Senegal Role Overview The Nature-based Solutions & Carbon Manager will lead carbon quantification and modelling across Tree Aid’s growing NbS portfolio. Working across the full project lifecycle, the role spans: Early-stage feasibility assessments and project design Forest growth, yield and sequestration modelling Development and oversight of monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems Integration of field, spatial and remote-sensing data Support to carbon credit issuance and market engagement Recognised standards and methodologies will be applied throughout, particularly Verra ARR methodologies, including VM0047. Technical and Strategic Focus This position combines hands-on technical work with outward-facing strategic engagement. Key technical responsibilities include: Carbon quantification for forest restoration and land-use projects Geospatial analysis using GIS and remote-sensing platforms Forest inventory design and long-term sequestration projections Use of advanced analytical tools, including Python, R and database systems At the same time, the role has a strong strategic dimension. The postholder will: Work directly with investors and carbon market stakeholders Contribute to the marketing, positioning and sale of carbon credits Support the development of equitable climate finance approaches Collaborate with Tree Aid’s Advocacy Team to inform policy discussions and strengthen the organisation’s influence in international NbS and carbon market forums Key Responsibilities The Nature-based Solutions & Carbon Manager will: Lead the development and delivery of high-integrity NbS carbon projects from concept to credit issuance Ensure methodological rigour, data integrity and MRV excellence across all carbon activities Drive innovation through emerging technologies, including drone-based data collection, land-cover classification and AI-enabled monitoring tools Provide technical leadership, mentoring and capacity building for country teams and partner organisations Represent Tree Aid as a recognised technical authority on forest restoration, nature-based solutions and community-centred carbon finance Candidate Profile Tree Aid is seeking a confident and motivated professional with: Strong technical expertise in forest carbon, NbS or ecological modelling Experience in forestry, environmental science, environmental data science, remote sensing or carbon project development The ability to work with complex datasets, uncertainty and interdisciplinary teams A clear commitment to international development and community-led approaches Fluency in English is essential, while French is desirable. Candidates who are keen to develop their language skills are encouraged to apply.
