Location: Los Angeles, California, USADepartment: Environmental Education and Outdoor EquitySalary: $27.00 per hourApplication Type: Full-Time TreePeople, a pioneering Los Angeles–based environmental nonprofit, is seeking an Eco Opportunities Instructor to join its Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity Department. This role supports TreePeople’s mission to empower communities to take personal responsibility for the urban environment — through education, sustainable practices, and community engagement. About TreePeople For over 50 years, TreePeople has been at the forefront of urban sustainability in Los Angeles. The organization connects people with nature, championing solutions such as tree planting, rainwater harvesting, and soil regeneration to combat climate change and build climate-resilient cities. The Eco Opportunities Program is a key part of TreePeople’s education and workforce development initiatives. It offers semester-long courses and internships that inspire youth and young adults to pursue green careers and take action for environmental justice and sustainability in their communities. Role Overview The Eco Opportunities Instructor will lead environmental education and workforce development programs, teaching green careers courses and mentoring youth in sustainability-focused projects. Working closely with the Eco Opportunities Program Manager, the Instructor will deliver engaging, hands-on lessons in formal classroom settings and during outdoor field experiences. The successful candidate will serve as both educator and mentor — guiding participants aged 14–24 to explore careers in conservation, environmental science, and climate resilience. Key Responsibilities The Instructor will be responsible for implementing innovative, culturally relevant educational experiences that inspire participants to care for the planet and their communities. Major duties include: Supporting the Eco Opportunities Program Manager in achieving program goals and grant deliverables. Leading green career development courses at RUTH YouthBuild in Canoga Park and other partner sites, including lesson planning, classroom instruction, and coordination of field trips and guest speakers. Supervising high school and college interns engaged in green career development programs, ensuring adherence to TreePeople’s policies and youth protection standards. Developing and updating curriculum materials that align with grant requirements, environmental education standards, and participant interests. Planning and managing exposure trips across Los Angeles County that highlight sustainability, green infrastructure, and environmental careers. Assisting with participant recruitment through outreach to schools, youth programs, and community-based organizations. Collecting and maintaining accurate program data using Salesforce, Asana, Google Suite, and other tools. Supporting the preparation of grant reports, program evaluations, and budget tracking. Representing TreePeople and the Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity Team in community events, workshops, and partner meetings. Performing additional duties as assigned to enhance program success and organizational impact. Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate is an experienced educator and environmental advocate who is passionate about connecting youth with green career pathways. The following qualifications are required or highly desirable: A Single Subject Teaching Credential (Biological Sciences or related field) or equivalent classroom teaching experience. Proven experience working with youth ages 14–24, preferably in outdoor education or project-based learning settings. Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles and the ability to implement culturally relevant curricula. Strong commitment to environmental education and sustainability. Knowledge of educational theory, pedagogy, and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is advantageous. Familiarity with ecological systems, environmental challenges in urban areas, and sustainable green solutions. Ability to plan and lead field trips throughout Los Angeles County, including safe transportation of participants. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail. Strong communication abilities, including public speaking, writing, and interpersonal engagement. High proficiency with Salesforce, Asana, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and other digital tools. Fluency in Spanish is an asset. Must hold a valid California driver’s license and have reliable transportation. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, including occasional weekends as needed. Working Environment This position involves a balance of classroom instruction, field-based learning, and administrative coordination. Candidates should be comfortable engaging diverse groups of students and community partners, fostering enthusiasm for environmental stewardship, and modeling sustainable practices. TreePeople values inclusivity, innovation, and collaboration — encouraging staff to share ideas and take initiative in shaping impactful programs.
