Description

The Turing AI Global Fellowships represent a major strategic investment by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, to attract world-class Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers to the United Kingdom. With a total fund of £24.5 million and awards of up to £4.5 million per fellowship, this opportunity is designed to strengthen the UK’s position as a global AI leader. Applications are open from 18 November 2025 and close on 12 March 2026 at 4:00pm UK time. Fellowships must begin by 1 February 2027 and last up to five years. Programme Purpose This prestigious scheme targets exceptional AI researchers currently based outside the UK. It enables them to: Relocate to the UK Establish and lead a high-performing research team Deliver transformational, state-of-the-art AI research Strengthen the UK AI ecosystem and research culture The initiative aligns with national AI ambitions and contributes to the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan. Funding Structure Each fellowship may include three components: 1. Fellowship Award (80% FEC) Covers: Salaries (fellow and research staff) Research and innovation associates Travel and collaboration costs Equipment (£25,000–£400,000 per item, 80% funded) Training and research expenses 2. Training Grant (100% FEC) Funding for up to three doctoral students Tuition fees (minimum UKRI rate: £5,006 for 2025/26) Stipend (minimum £20,780 for 2025/26) Research Training Support Grant 3. Separate Relocation Award (100% FEC) Visa fees (including Immigration Health Surcharge) Moving and relocation expenses Support for dependents Relocation costs are separate from the £4.5 million funding cap and are expected not to exceed £40,000. Eligibility Criteria Applicant Requirements Applicants must: Have been based outside the UK for at least 24 months prior to application Be internationally recognised AI researchers or demonstrate exceptional leadership potential Secure support from an eligible UK host organisation Commit at least 50% full-time equivalent (FTE) to the fellowship There is no nationality restriction. If required, successful fellows may apply for a UKRI-endorsed Global Talent visa. Applicants must demonstrate experience in: Strategic leadership and programme management Managing teams and resources Establishing a research specialism Contributing to international AI leadership Host Organisation Requirements Eligible UK research organisations must: Be registered with UKRI Hold at least £25 million in active AI research funding Submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) by 9 January 2026 Provide a tailored and substantial support package The host institution must articulate its AI strategy and describe how the fellow strengthens long-term institutional capability. Research Scope The fellowship supports ambitious, cutting-edge AI research that advances the state of the art. Eligible projects include: Development of novel AI methodologies Foundational or theoretical AI research Cross-disciplinary research advancing core AI understanding Projects applying existing AI methods without generating new techniques or insights are not eligible. All research must embed: Trustworthy and socially responsible AI principles Sustainability and ethical considerations Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Leadership Expectations Fellows are expected to: Lead world-class AI research teams Influence national and international AI strategy Build cross-sector partnerships Engage with academia, industry, government, and civil society Advocate for responsible AI adoption Successful fellows will join the Turing Fellows cohort, supported by The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI. Cohort engagement includes: Annual events and showcases Knowledge exchange forums Cross-disciplinary collaboration Compute & Infrastructure Up to 5,000,000 GPU hours are available for the fellowship cohort via the UK’s AI Research Resource (AIRR), equivalent to 1,000,000 GPU hours per fellow. Fellows must: Plan compute requirements in advance Submit estimates by 31 August 2026 Complete compliance processes before research begins Access will be monitored and adjusted to maximise national research impact. Assessment Focus Applications will be evaluated on: Research excellence and originality Leadership capability Institutional support and sustainability Ecosystem engagement and partnerships Commitment to EDI and responsible AI This is a highly competitive call, with host institutions limited to two applications each. Strategic Impact The Turing AI Global Fellowships aim to: Attract global AI talent to the UK Expand AI research capability and capacity Strengthen long-term sustainability of UK AI Foster inclusive and diverse research environments Advance AI technologies with global societal benefit By combining substantial funding, strategic institutional backing, and national compute resources, this programme positions the UK at the forefront of next-generation AI research.
