A leading UK ocean conservation charity is recruiting a Social Media Manager to help inspire large-scale public action for a cleaner, healthier marine environment. The organisation works to protect the ocean by championing science-based solutions and uniting communities, policymakers and industry. The Social Media Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping how the charity communicates its mission, highlights the urgency of ocean protection and engages audiences across multiple digital platforms. The position offers a salary of £32,000 to £35,500 per year, is full time at 35 hours per week and provides flexible or remote working within the UK. Role Overview The Social Media Manager will oversee content strategy and execution, ensuring the organisation’s digital channels drive awareness, engagement and meaningful action. The postholder will take responsibility for the creative direction and operational management of the charity’s social media presence, collaborating with colleagues to tell impactful stories about marine conservation, campaigns, policy work and partnership achievements. This role provides the opportunity to work with compelling subject matter, from wildlife such as humpbacks and jellyfish to major campaigns that support community involvement and environmental protection. Key Responsibilities The Social Media Manager will develop, lead and refine the organisation’s social media strategy, working to increase reach, engagement and measurable impact. Responsibilities include leading content planning and delivery across Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Bluesky; managing the charity’s social media tools and scheduling systems; coordinating with teams across policy, partnerships, fundraising and communications; producing regular performance reports; and using data insights to adapt strategy and improve content effectiveness. The Manager will also support paid campaigns in collaboration with external advertising agencies, ensuring that social content reaches priority audiences and contributes to organisational goals. Main Duties The role involves strategic planning, content creation, reporting and stakeholder collaboration. Duties include developing social media strategies that support long-term organisational objectives; maintaining a structured content calendar; leading cross-team planning to ensure social amplification of key campaigns; and working closely with the Digital Channels Manager and Media Manager to align messaging. The Social Media Manager will oversee the use of Loomly, the current scheduling tool, while also assessing new technologies that improve insights, social listening and performance tracking. Additional duties include maintaining consistent community management approaches across channels; providing guidance to devolved accounts such as education-focused platforms; developing best-practice guidelines for internal staff using social media; delivering monthly performance insights; producing trend analysis and benchmarking against sector leaders; and generating reports highlighting the impact of partnerships, campaigns, income generation and sponsorships. The postholder will support paid social campaigns by drafting briefs, contributing to strategy development and coordinating reporting with agency partners. The role is primarily home-based within the UK, though occasional travel to meetings, events or offices in locations such as London or Edinburgh may be required. Person Specification Applicants must have strong professional experience in social media management and a deep understanding of audience behaviour, platform algorithms and strategic content planning. Essential knowledge and experience include a track record of producing creative and impactful social campaigns; strong understanding of multi-platform audience engagement; experience in a Social Media Manager role or senior-level digital position; familiarity with paid advertising and current digital trends; understanding of data protection, platform policies and ethical use of AI; and experience working across teams to deliver coordinated campaigns. Desirable experience includes previous work in environmental or mission-driven organisations and the ability to communicate complex environmental topics to diverse audiences. Skills and Abilities The role requires excellent content planning and storytelling skills, strong analytical ability to turn data into actionable recommendations, confidence in influencing colleagues and teams, and capability in content creation using tools such as Canva. The postholder must demonstrate strong creative judgement, the ability to maintain consistent brand tone and visual cohesion, robust project management skills, effective communication and collaboration abilities and strategic thinking that links creative outputs to organisational goals.
