globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

August 24, 2026

Description

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has announced a new recruitment opportunity for experienced administrative professionals to join its roster of Executive Assistant to Judge (G-6) positions. Based in The Hague, Netherlands, the temporary roster will support Judges of the Court by providing high-level executive and administrative assistance during periods of staff absence, including parental and sick leave. The vacancy, published on 23 July 2026, seeks highly organised professionals with extensive executive support experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to work in an international judicial environment. Applications are open until 5 September 2026. Join the Principal Judicial Organ of the United Nations The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, responsible for settling legal disputes between States in accordance with international law and issuing advisory opinions on legal questions referred by authorised UN bodies and specialised agencies. Unlike most UN entities, the Court operates through its own Registry, which provides judicial, legal, and administrative support to the 15 Judges elected by the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The Executive Assistant plays a critical role in ensuring Judges receive efficient administrative, logistical, and operational support, enabling them to carry out their judicial responsibilities effectively. About the Position The Executive Assistant reports directly to an assigned Judge while working under the administrative supervision of the Coordinator of Judges’ Executive Assistants and the overall guidance of the Deputy Registrar. Successful candidates will be placed on a roster and may be called upon to fill temporary assignments, sometimes at short notice, to replace Executive Assistants who are on leave. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced administrative professionals interested in working within one of the world’s highest international judicial institutions. Key Responsibilities The Executive Assistant will provide comprehensive executive, administrative, and operational support across a wide range of functions. Primary responsibilities include: • Managing the Judge’s calendar, meetings, and daily schedule. • Coordinating administrative workflows and monitoring task completion. • Preparing meeting documentation, summaries, and follow-up actions. • Handling confidential correspondence and sensitive information. • Screening communications and responding to administrative enquiries. • Supporting judicial documentation, legal opinions, draft decisions, and committee reports. • Organising legal reference materials and maintaining physical and electronic records. • Managing databases, contact lists, and document archives. • Coordinating travel arrangements, protocol matters, and official visits. • Assisting with financial, procurement, and personnel administration. • Supporting recruitment and onboarding of law clerks and judicial fellows. • Organising high-level meetings, diplomatic engagements, and official events. • Providing informal translations of legal or academic documents between English and French when required. Required Qualifications Applicants must possess: • A high school diploma or equivalent. • A university degree is considered an advantage. Professional Experience Candidates must demonstrate substantial executive support experience. Requirements include: • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience supporting senior executives in a professional or international environment. • Applicants with a first university degree require a minimum of five years of relevant experience. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other computer applications. Desirable Experience The Court also values candidates with experience in: • Diplomatic protocol and professional etiquette. • Legal or judicial institutions. • The United Nations Common System or comparable international organisations. Language Requirements Because the Court operates bilingually, applicants must demonstrate strong language proficiency. Candidates must possess: • Advanced (UN Level III) proficiency in either English or French. • Intermediate (UN Level II) proficiency in the other language. Additional knowledge of the following languages is considered an asset: • Dutch. • Arabic. • Chinese (Mandarin). • Russian. • Spanish. Skills and Competencies Successful applicants should demonstrate: • Professionalism and integrity. • Excellent planning and organisational abilities. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to work collaboratively within multicultural teams. • Accountability and sound judgement. • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion. Assessment Process Candidates selected for further consideration will participate in: • A written assessment. • A competency-based interview. The recruitment process is designed to evaluate both technical competence and behavioural competencies required for the role. Important Recruitment Information This recruitment aims to establish a roster for temporary appointments rather than permanent positions. Applicants should note: • The roster will be used to fill temporary vacancies as they arise. • There is no guarantee of a fixed-term appointment after a temporary assignment. • The position is subject to local recruitment under United Nations Staff Rule 4.4. • Applicants residing outside the Netherlands may apply but will be treated as locally recruited staff if selected. • Candidates invited to in-person interviews in The Hague will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Selected candidates may also undergo security clearance, credential verification, and criminal record checks before appointment. Compensation and Benefits The International Court of Justice offers a competitive employment package for successful candidates. Benefits include: • Salary paid in euros. • Thirty days of annual leave. • Pension plan. • Subsidised medical insurance. Additional terms and conditions apply in accordance with United Nations regulations and local recruitment policies. Application Deadline Interested applicants should submit their applications through the United Nations Inspira recruitment platform no later than 5 September 2026. Experienced executive assistants seeking to contribute to international justice, diplomacy, and the work of the United Nations are encouraged to apply before the closing date.
