UN Women is inviting applications for an Assistant Graphic Design and Data Visualization Consultant under a home-based retainer contract. The role is structured to support ongoing programme needs, particularly within the Women Count initiative, and is ideal for candidates with strong design, communication, and data visualization skills. About UN Women and the Women Count Programme UN Women operates as the United Nations agency dedicated to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls worldwide. Its work spans humanitarian action, sustainable development, and human rights, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated across all sectors. A key initiative under UN Women is the Women Count programme, which focuses on strengthening gender data systems globally. The programme supports countries in producing, analyzing, and using gender statistics to inform policy decisions and track progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. In East and Southern Africa, Women Count has significantly improved the availability and use of gender data. The current phase emphasizes increasing the uptake and practical application of this data, making effective communication and visualization more important than ever. Role Overview and Consultancy Objective The Assistant Graphic Design and Data Visualization Consultant will play a critical role in packaging and communicating gender data insights to diverse audiences. By producing visually engaging and accessible content, the consultant will help bridge the gap between technical data and public understanding. The consultancy aims to: Enhance the visibility and usability of gender data Support evidence-based policymaking through effective communication Strengthen stakeholder engagement through creative outputs Contribute directly to the Women Count programme’s Outcome 3 This is a retainer-based role, meaning assignments will be provided as needed, each with defined deliverables and timelines. Key Responsibilities and Scope of Work The consultant will collaborate closely with the UN Women East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) statistics team and contribute to a range of design and communication tasks. Graphic Design and Publication Development Design and layout long-form publications, including reports and research outputs Produce high-quality documents with integrated charts, infographics, and visual elements Ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with UN Women branding Data Visualization and Communication Translate complex gender data into accessible visual formats Develop infographics, diagrams, and data-driven storytelling materials Support dissemination of findings to policymakers and the public Digital and Social Media Content Creation Create engaging social media graphics tailored to different platforms Adapt content for diverse regional audiences Enhance online visibility of programme outputs Capacity Building and Collaboration Support training and mentorship for country office teams and partners Promote best practices in design and data visualization Collaborate with internal teams to refine communication strategies Consultancy Structure and Working Conditions This consultancy is fully remote and operates under a 12-month retainer agreement. Work assignments will be issued periodically based on programme needs. Key features include: Home-based and flexible working arrangement Task-based assignments with defined deliverables Opportunity for occasional travel (covered by UN Women if required) No guaranteed minimum workload This model is designed to ensure flexibility while maintaining high-quality output across multiple projects. Required Qualifications and Experience Candidates must demonstrate both technical expertise and the ability to communicate complex information effectively. Education Completion of secondary education is required A Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related field is an advantage Professional Experience At least 6 years of experience with secondary education, or 3 years with a bachelor’s degree Proven experience in graphic design and data visualization Strong portfolio showcasing reports, infographics, and digital content Technical Skills Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) Strong layout, typography, and visual storytelling skills Experience designing for both print and digital formats Additional Competencies Excellent communication and collaboration skills High attention to detail and accuracy Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines Familiarity with gender equality or human rights issues is an asset Language Requirements Fluency in English is required Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage Why This Opportunity Stands Out This consultancy offers a meaningful opportunity to apply creative skills to global development challenges.
