The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced a new internship opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in international development, environmental affairs, conference coordination, and resource mobilization. The position, titled International Conference Support and Resource Mobilization Intern, is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and forms part of the United Nations internship programme aimed at providing young professionals with practical experience within the UN system. Internship Details The internship is classified under the Environmental Affairs job family at Internship Level I-1 and will run for a duration of six months. The successful candidate will work in an office-based setting in Geneva under the supervision of Programme Management Officers within UNEP. The internship offers an opportunity to gain exposure to high-level international conference planning, stakeholder engagement, communications, and resource mobilization activities linked to environmental governance and sustainable development initiatives. Key Responsibilities The selected intern will support the preparation and coordination of the first International Conference organized by the programme team. Responsibilities will include assisting with planning meetings, maintaining timelines, and coordinating follow-up actions related to conference organization. Additional duties include: Assisting with the preparation of briefing notes, presentations, background materials, and participant information packages Supporting stakeholder engagement and communication with Member States, NGOs, UN entities, and development partners Assisting with logistical coordination for both virtual and in-person meetings Preparing agendas, taking meeting notes, and supporting technical execution of events Supporting the development of banners, newsletters, and communication materials Assisting with resource mobilization materials, including donor pitch decks Supporting private sector engagement initiatives Performing other administrative and programme-related tasks as required The internship is particularly suited to individuals interested in international relations, sustainable development, communications, environmental governance, and conference management. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet at least one of the following academic criteria: Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (Master’s degree or equivalent) Be enrolled in or have completed the final year of a bachelor’s degree programme Be enrolled in or have completed a PhD programme The United Nations noted that prior professional work experience is not required for internship applicants. However, candidates must have academic backgrounds relevant to the internship field. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate: Strong organizational and analytical skills Excellent drafting and report-writing abilities Proficiency in standard software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams Research and communication skills Knowledge of UN procedures, conference management, and resource mobilization material development will be considered an added advantage. Internship Funding and Visa Information The United Nations clarified that interns are not financially remunerated. Successful candidates will be responsible for covering their own travel expenses, accommodation, visa arrangements, and living costs during the internship period. Candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland may also be required to obtain appropriate visas and work authorization documentation before commencing the internship.
