The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is inviting applications for the position of Associate National Project Officer – Education, based in New Delhi. This opportunity is part of UNESCO’s Education Sector and focuses on advancing sustainability and education outcomes through innovative programme implementation. The position is offered on a project appointment basis for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding availability. Organisational Context This role is embedded within a collaborative initiative between UNESCO and the Government of Himachal Pradesh known as HP FUTURES. The project is designed to strengthen education systems through three integrated pillars: Competency-Based Education for 21st Century Skills Values Education through Sport Greening Education The selected candidate will primarily lead efforts within the Greening Education pillar, while also contributing to broader regional initiatives across South Asia. Key Responsibilities The Associate National Project Officer will play a central role in programme coordination, stakeholder engagement, and technical implementation. Responsibilities include: A. Greening Education – HP FUTURES Lead the implementation of sustainability-focused education initiatives Conduct district-level workshops to build teacher capacity in climate education Support schools in developing action plans aligned with Green School Quality Standards Collaborate with government departments and education bodies Integrate environmental themes into curriculum frameworks across schools Coordinate Eco-Club activities, including competitions and community engagement programmes B. Regional Greening Education Initiatives Provide technical support to UNESCO’s education programmes across South Asia Contribute to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and climate education strategies Engage with ministries, institutions, and development partners Develop concept notes, project proposals, and workplans Draft technical documents, reports, and advocacy materials Maintain project documentation and knowledge-sharing systems C. Programme and Operational Support Assist in organising events, consultations, and missions Support monitoring, evaluation, and reporting processes Contribute to office-wide initiatives and collaborative activities Required Qualifications Candidates must meet the following criteria: Education Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in: Education Environmental Science Sustainable Development Social Sciences or related fields Work Experience Less than two years of relevant professional experience in: Education programme implementation Project coordination Environmental or sustainability education Skills and Competencies Strong understanding of: Greening Education principles Education for Sustainable Development SDG 4.7 (quality education and sustainability) Proven ability in: Programme coordination and stakeholder engagement Drafting technical and policy documents Supporting partnerships and proposal development Excellent analytical, reporting, and communication skills Languages Fluency in English (written and spoken) Working knowledge of Hindi Desirable Qualifications While not mandatory, the following will be considered advantageous: Experience in teacher training and curriculum development Familiarity with the Himachal Pradesh education system Professional exposure to the UN system or international organisations Experience working in multicultural or multi-country environments Benefits and Compensation The position offers a competitive compensation package aligned with UNESCO standards.
