The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) has announced two new Graduate Professional (Space Security) opportunities for young professionals and graduate students interested in international security, disarmament, and outer space governance. The positions are based in Geneva and are expected to begin on 1 July 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. UNIDIR Expands Its Space Security Programme The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research is an autonomous institution within the United Nations system dedicated to independent research on disarmament and international security issues. Through its Space Security Programme, UNIDIR works to strengthen understanding of the security challenges surrounding outer space and the growing use of space technologies. The programme supports global efforts to maintain outer space as a peaceful and secure domain for all humanity. The newly announced Graduate Professional positions provide early-career professionals with a unique opportunity to contribute directly to high-level international policy research and multilateral security processes. About the Graduate Professional (Space Security) Role UNIDIR is recruiting two Graduate Professionals for six-month temporary contracts, with the possibility of extension. Key Position Details Location: Geneva Start Date: 1 July 2026 or ASAP Contract Duration: 6 months, with possible extension Occupational Rate: 100% Monthly Stipend: USD 1,331 for in-person participation USD 665.50 for remote participation The stipend is intended as a contribution toward living expenses. Main Responsibilities Successful candidates will work under the supervision of the Head of the Space Security Programme and contribute to a range of research, event management, and administrative activities. Responsibilities Include: Supporting research for the Space Security Portal and PAROS timeline Assisting with organisation of virtual, hybrid, and in-person events Supporting the Outer Space Security Conference Monitoring multilateral space security processes, including the OEWG on PAROS Assisting with publication development and editing Supporting communication and administrative tasks Contributing to programme implementation and daily operations The role offers valuable exposure to international diplomacy, policy development, and United Nations processes related to outer space security. Skills and Competencies Required UNIDIR is looking for candidates with strong organisational, analytical, and communication abilities. Desired Skills Include: Research and analytical writing skills Ability to synthesise complex information into concise briefs Strong planning and multitasking abilities Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Familiarity with: Zoom Trello Canva InDesign Candidates should also demonstrate a strong interest in: Space security International peace and security Disarmament Gender issues in security policy United Nations work and multilateral diplomacy Eligibility Requirements Educational Qualifications Applicants must either: Be currently enrolled in a graduate programme; or Have completed a graduate degree within the past year Preferred academic backgrounds include: International relations Political science International law International security Work Experience Professional work experience is not required. However, experience or demonstrated interest in: Research Event organisation Administrative coordination Space security and related policy issues will be considered an advantage.
