Empowering the Next Generation of Industrial Development Professionals The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) offers a structured and immersive Internship Programme designed to provide hands-on experience in international cooperation and sustainable industrial development. Through this initiative, students and recent graduates gain valuable exposure to the work of a global organization committed to advancing inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) across the world. The programme offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects, develop professional skills in a multicultural setting, and better understand how UNIDO’s work supports economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social progress. Eligibility Criteria The UNIDO Internship Programme is open to students and recent graduates from UNIDO Member States who meet one of the following criteria: Currently enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree programme; Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree (or higher) programme; or Have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree within the last 12 months. Applicants must demonstrate fluency in the working language of the duty station, which may vary by location. Candidates who meet these academic and language requirements are encouraged to apply for the internship openings that best align with their background and interests. Internship Locations and Duration UNIDO internships are available at its Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, as well as in field offices around the world. Duration: Typically 3 to 6 months, with the possibility of extending up to 12 months for sponsored internships. Start Date: Internships commence on the first day of each month or on the next working day if the first day falls on a weekend or public holiday. This flexibility ensures that internships can be aligned with academic calendars and personal availability, while maintaining the integrity and continuity of work within UNIDO teams. Financial and Logistical Information As of September 2025, all interns receive a monthly stipend intended to help cover basic living costs at their duty station. Interns are, however, responsible for arranging and covering their own travel, visa, accommodation, insurance, and personal expenses. UNIDO provides official support letters to assist with visa applications. While interns contribute significantly to UNIDO’s operations, they are not authorized to travel on official missions during their assignment. The internship experience is designed to foster learning and contribution within the office setting. Please note that participation in the internship does not guarantee future employment with UNIDO. However, former interns are welcome to apply for open positions following completion of their internship, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. Many UN agencies recognise internship experience as relevant professional experience for entry-level positions. What UNIDO Looks For UNIDO seeks motivated and committed individuals who share the organization’s passion for sustainable industrial growth and equitable development. Ideal candidates should demonstrate: Integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity, which are the core values guiding all UNIDO staff; A collaborative and team-oriented mindset, contributing positively to a multicultural work environment; Intellectual curiosity and creativity, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to problem-solving; and A genuine commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and UNIDO’s mission of fostering inclusive and sustainable industrial development. Successful interns are those who view the experience not only as professional training, but also as an opportunity to participate in real global change through applied research, project support, and cross-sector collaboration. Application and Selection Process Internship opportunities are published regularly on the UNIDO Careers Portal, and interested candidates are invited to apply online by following the specific instructions in each posting. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis according to project needs and candidate qualifications. Given the high number of applications received each year, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews or assessments. However, all applications are retained in the UNIDO internship database for up to one year, allowing for consideration for future openings should a suitable opportunity arise. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the programme details carefully before submitting their materials and to tailor their application to reflect their relevant skills, academic background, and interest in industrial development and sustainability. Building a Career with Global Impact The UNIDO Internship Programme serves as an entry point into the world of international development and global industry transformation. It provides early-career professionals with exposure to thematic areas such as green industrialization, circular economy, trade capacity building, energy transition, technology innovation, and gender equality in industry. Interns collaborate closely with experts across departments and geographical regions, gaining a practical understanding of how policy, research, and technical cooperation intersect to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Upon completion of the internship, participants leave with enhanced professional competencies, a broadened international perspective, and valuable insights into multilateral cooperation—preparing them for careers in international organizations, public policy, academia, and industry. Join UNIDO’s Global Network UNIDO welcomes talented individuals who are eager to make a difference through innovation, collaboration, and inclusive industrial solutions.
