The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN’s lead agency on international development, is offering an internship opportunity within its Administrative Law Team in New York. Operating across more than 170 countries and territories, UNDP supports countries in eradicating poverty, reducing inequality, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Its work focuses on three key areas: Sustainable development Democratic governance and peacebuilding Climate and disaster resilience This internship is hosted within the Office of Legal Services (OLS) under the Bureau for Management Services (BMS). OLS serves as UNDP’s in-house counsel, providing legal guidance and support across the organization’s global operations. It comprises three specialized teams: Corporate and Institutional Team Programmes and Projects Team Administrative Law Team The Administrative Law Team advises senior management at headquarters, country offices, and affiliated UN entities on legal matters related to staff administration and UN Volunteers. Its key responsibilities include: Reviewing and advising on the formulation of internal policies and procedures Analyzing investigation reports and identifying legal or factual issues in disciplinary processes Recommending actions in cases of alleged misconduct Handling appeals against administrative decisions Representing UNDP in litigation before the internal UN justice system Internship Responsibilities Under the guidance of a Senior Legal Advisor, the Legal Intern will support the Administrative Law Team by performing the following duties: Conduct in-depth legal research on topics related to UN Staff Regulations and Rules, and jurisprudence of United Nations Administrative Tribunals Analyze investigation reports and identify critical legal or factual issues Provide legal analysis for cases, disputes, and internal inquiries Draft legal documents, including formal correspondence, administrative decisions, and tribunal submissions Assist with matters concerning privileges and immunities Contribute to the review of legal issues arising in policies and procedures Offer general support to the office as needed Competencies and Skills UNDP emphasizes both core and cross-functional competencies.
