The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the principal global authority responsible for guiding international action on environmental issues. The Programme Support Intern position is based at UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The role is intended to support programme coordination and management within the Ecosystems Division, with a focus on project monitoring, data management, publication oversight, and operational support. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Programme Support Unit. Key Responsibilities The Programme Support Intern contributes to a range of core functions that enhance the Division’s project oversight and operational efficiency: Project Implementation Review The intern assists in monitoring project implementation progress by supporting updates to the Ecosystems Division Project Portfolio Dashboard and the Integrated Planning, Monitoring and Reporting (IPMR) system. This includes reviewing project milestones, reporting timelines, and overall performance. Project Cycle and Operational Support The role involves supporting project cycle management processes, including operational closure activities. The intern helps ensure that project-related documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned with UNEP’s programme management procedures. Data Entry and Validation The intern is responsible for entering, validating, and verifying project information in IPMR and other relevant databases. This work supports data accuracy and strengthens evidence-based reporting across the Division. Financial Implementation Review The intern provides support in analysing the status of project financial implementation by utilising available information systems. This may involve reviewing expenditure data, cross-checking budget allocations, and identifying gaps that require follow-up. Publications Quality Assurance The role includes supporting quality assurance processes for publication concepts and completed publications. The intern ensures alignment with UNEP Publishing Policy and related guidelines, helping to maintain the organisation’s global communications standards. The intern also assists in tracking the clearance process for publications using UNEP’s online systems. This includes updating the publications master file, maintaining tracking tools, and ensuring timely processing of publication-related documents. Additional Operational Support The intern provides flexible, ad hoc assistance to support unit-wide functions. Tasks may include administrative support, document review, meeting coordination, and other duties assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications and Skills Applicants must meet one of the following academic requirements to be eligible: Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or Have recently completed a degree at either level. Strong computer literacy is essential. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams. A background in statistics, project management, international relations, international business administration, or a related field is desirable. Candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its principles. The role requires the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, showing respect, tolerance, and openness to differing perspectives. Excellent written and spoken English is required. Fluency is defined as the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English at a professional level. Knowledge of another official UN language is regarded as an asset. Additional Information Internships with the United Nations are not remunerated. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa arrangements, accommodation, and daily living expenses. Candidates who are not residents or citizens of the internship duty station may need to secure appropriate visas or work authorisations.
