The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has announced a new remote internship opportunity within its Human Resources Section, offering aspiring development professionals the chance to contribute to global learning and capacity-building initiatives supporting volunteers in more than 130 countries. The six-month internship, officially titled UNV Human Resources Section – Capacity Development Intern, is home-based and designed for students and recent graduates seeking practical experience in international development, human resources, communications, and learning management within the United Nations system. Hosted under the United Nations Volunteers programme and administered by the United Nations Development Programme, the role focuses on supporting training and professional development activities for UN Volunteers worldwide. Applications for the internship opened on May 15, 2026, and will remain open until May 23, 2026. Global Learning and Capacity Development Role According to the vacancy announcement, the internship will support the Capacity Development Team within UNV’s Human Resources Section. The team is responsible for designing and delivering learning experiences that strengthen volunteer effectiveness, leadership, and career development across diverse operational environments. Interns selected for the role will assist in coordinating global workshops, supporting online learning delivery, preparing training materials, and managing participant engagement during virtual events. The position also includes responsibilities related to communication and advocacy, with interns expected to support the development of promotional content, awareness campaigns, and communication materials highlighting volunteer impact and learning initiatives. UNV stated that the internship is intended to align closely with academic study areas such as international relations, international development, human resources, education, communications, marketing, and adult learning. Remote Internship Reflects Growing Digital Workforce Trends The home-based structure of the internship reflects the growing shift toward remote collaboration and digital learning within international organizations. Successful candidates will work with regional offices, field units, facilitators, and subject matter experts across multiple countries and time zones. The internship also provides exposure to digital learning systems, including the UNV eCampus platform, where interns will help maintain learning resources and support online accessibility for volunteers globally. As international institutions continue expanding virtual operations, digital communication and collaboration skills are increasingly becoming essential requirements for young professionals entering the development sector. UNV highlighted the importance of strong organizational, communication, and teamwork abilities for applicants, alongside technical proficiency in platforms such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, and online collaboration tools. Knowledge of design software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Illustrator, and InDesign, is considered an added advantage, particularly for candidates interested in communication and digital engagement roles. Focus on Volunteerism and International Development Founded to promote peace and sustainable development through volunteerism, United Nations Volunteers works with governments, UN agencies, and development partners to mobilize skilled volunteers for humanitarian and development programmes around the world. The organization currently maintains field presence in more than 80 countries and supports volunteer-driven initiatives across sectors including education, health, climate action, governance, and crisis response. Through this internship, selected candidates are expected to gain practical understanding of how volunteerism contributes to global development priorities while building professional experience within a multicultural international environment. UNV said interns will also contribute to monitoring and evaluation processes by helping track participation, collect feedback, and analyze data related to training outcomes and communication campaigns. Eligibility Requirements and Language Skills Applicants must meet at least one of the United Nations Development Programme internship eligibility criteria at the time of application. Candidates must either be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme, completing the final year of undergraduate studies, recently graduated, or participating in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme. Fluency in English is mandatory for the role, while knowledge of additional official UN languages — including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish — is considered highly desirable. The internship is classified under the UNDP Internship Programme and includes a monthly stipend in accordance with UNDP policy. However, interns are expected to cover expenses related to travel, insurance, and other personal costs unless financially supported by external institutions or sponsors. Career Development Opportunity for Emerging Professionals The internship presents a significant opportunity for students and early-career professionals seeking exposure to international human resources management, digital learning systems, and global volunteer coordination. UNV emphasized that the programme is designed to complement academic learning rather than guarantee employment within the United Nations system. Nevertheless, the experience may provide valuable networking, professional development, and cross-cultural collaboration opportunities for future careers in international development and humanitarian work. The organization also reaffirmed its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity employment, encouraging applications from qualified candidates of all backgrounds.
