The Kenneth C. Griffin Applied Economics Incubator at the University of Chicago is inviting applications for its AI in the Workplace Fellowship for Spring Quarter 2027. The fellowship supports faculty members and PhD students conducting innovative research on how artificial intelligence is transforming work, workers, firms, organisations and labour markets. Selected fellows may receive up to $25,000 in research support, with travel and accommodation provided. The fellowship offers an opportunity to engage with the University of Chicago research community, receive feedback on ongoing work and develop new research collaborations. The application deadline is 30 October 2026. About the AI in the Workplace Fellowship The fellowship is part of the Kenneth C. Griffin Applied Economics Incubator’s AI in the Workplace initiative, which examines the rapidly changing relationship between artificial intelligence and the economy. The programme seeks researchers developing rigorous and innovative approaches to understanding how AI affects employment, productivity, skills, wages, organisations and the broader labour market. The fellowship is intended to provide dedicated research support during Spring Quarter 2027, allowing fellows to advance research projects that address important economic questions associated with the development and adoption of AI. Research Areas Applications are welcome from researchers working on a broad range of questions concerning AI and the economy. Potential areas include: Employment and labour demand Skills development and workforce transformation Wages, inequality and worker outcomes Productivity and technological adoption Firms and organisational practices Development and diffusion of AI technologies Changing workplace practices Economic implications of emerging AI systems The listed areas are illustrative rather than exhaustive. The Incubator encourages innovative research questions, new datasets and methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches. Fellowship Benefits Successful AI in the Workplace Fellows may receive up to $25,000 in research support to advance their research during Spring Quarter 2027. The fellowship also provides: Travel support Accommodation Engagement with the Kenneth C. Griffin Applied Economics Incubator Access to the wider University of Chicago research community Opportunities to participate in seminars and workshops Research discussions and conferences Opportunities to present work in progress Feedback from researchers and other experts Potential opportunities to establish new research collaborations The combination of financial support and academic engagement is designed to help fellows make meaningful progress on their research agenda. Eligibility The fellowship is open to faculty members and PhD students whose research engages with significant questions relating to artificial intelligence and the economy. Applicants should have a research agenda that demonstrates a clear connection to the AI in the Workplace initiative. Strong applications are expected to demonstrate a significant and original research question, a feasible research agenda and the potential for the fellowship to meaningfully advance the applicant’s work. Selection Criteria Applications will be assessed on several key factors, including: Significance and originality of the proposed research Relevance to the AI in the Workplace initiative Strength and feasibility of the research agenda Potential for the fellowship to advance the applicant’s research Potential contribution to the intellectual community of the Incubator Applicants should therefore clearly explain both the academic importance of their research and why the fellowship is particularly valuable at the proposed stage of the project. Application Requirements Applicants must submit: A 1–2 page research statement or proposal A current CV The research statement should explain: The research question and proposed project The significance of the research Its connection to AI in the Workplace The work the applicant intends to undertake during Spring Quarter 2027 How the fellowship would advance the applicant’s research Applicants should ensure that the proposal is concise while clearly demonstrating the originality, relevance and feasibility of the research.
