Location: United Kingdom (Hybrid working, Edinburgh-based)Organisation: University of Edinburgh – Edinburgh Earth Initiative & School of EngineeringDepartment: Social Responsibility and SustainabilityContract Type: Fixed-termDuration: 6 monthsWorking Pattern: Part-time, 9 hours per weekGrade: UE05Salary: £29,588–£33,951 per annum pro rata (£16.21–£18.60 per hour) Overview of the Opportunity The University of Edinburgh is seeking a postgraduate-level Earth Fellow to support the Failure Modes of Engineering (FeME) Network, a global initiative dedicated to reimagining engineering practices to better serve society. FeME promotes inclusive, resilient, and adaptive engineering approaches that respond to the interconnected challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, while amplifying the voices of women and underrepresented groups. The Earth Fellow: Climate Challenge Impact will play a key role in transforming the outputs of the FeME Climate Challenge event into structured, accessible, and meaningful insights. The position focuses on organising, cleaning, and synthesising both quantitative and qualitative data generated through the event, ensuring that diverse perspectives are accurately represented and ethically handled. The Fellow’s work will directly inform evaluation, communications, and research activities, contributing to climate-conscious engineering education and practice. About the Earth Fellows Programme Earth Fellows are part of the University of Edinburgh’s wider response to the global climate emergency. Fellows work on individual and collaborative projects aligned with the Edinburgh Earth Initiative’s mission to advance research-led impact, innovation, engagement, and teaching related to climate change and sustainability. As part of the programme, Fellows benefit from: Access to co-working space within a vibrant academic environment Opportunities for networking and professional development Engagement with interdisciplinary teams of researchers, students, and professional staff Exposure to partnerships and solutions addressing climate change at a global scale Key Responsibilities The Earth Fellow will contribute to the FeME Climate Challenge through a combination of data management, analysis, and reporting activities. Core responsibilities include: Data Organisation and Analysis Clean, sort, and organise data from event participants, sessions, and transcriptions Ensure consistency, accuracy, and ethical handling of quantitative and qualitative information Develop clear systems for storing and managing datasets Synthesis and Reporting Summarise complex information into clear, accessible written outputs Produce structured summaries and draft reports to support evaluation and research objectives Translate diverse perspectives and experiences into meaningful insights for wider audiences Visualisation and Communication Create visual representations of findings using appropriate tools Support FeME’s communications by producing clear, engaging data summaries Contribute to materials that amplify underrepresented voices within climate and engineering discussions Collaboration and Contribution Work closely with a multidisciplinary team across the Edinburgh Earth Initiative and FeME Network Contribute insights that support inclusive, climate-conscious approaches to engineering education and practice Eligibility and Requirements This fellowship is only open to current University of Edinburgh postgraduate students (Master’s-level or PhD) based in the UK.
