University of Leeds Opens Pathway to Postgraduate Research Through Summer Internships The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Future Fluid Dynamics at the University of Leeds is offering aspiring researchers an opportunity to gain practical experience through its Summer Research Internship Programme. The annual internship initiative is designed for students and graduates interested in exploring postgraduate research opportunities in fluid dynamics, while developing valuable research skills and experience within a leading academic environment. The programme supports greater access to postgraduate research by encouraging participation from individuals who are currently underrepresented in research communities. It aims to create a more diverse and inclusive future generation of researchers in engineering, physical sciences, environmental science, biological sciences, medicine, and health-related fields. About the Future Fluid Dynamics Summer Research Internship The Summer Research Internship Programme provides participants with first-hand exposure to university-level research at the University of Leeds. Through the programme, interns work on independent research projects under the supervision of experienced academics. The experience allows participants to: Explore whether postgraduate research is the right pathway for them. Develop practical research skills. Gain experience working in an academic research environment. Strengthen future applications for research degrees. Build confidence in scientific investigation and problem-solving. The programme is particularly valuable for individuals considering progression to Postgraduate Research (PGR) programmes. Paid Independent Research Projects Available Successful applicants will complete a paid independent research project supervised by University of Leeds academics. Internship projects involve: Up to 210 hours of research work. A duration of approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Flexible scheduling over a maximum period of three months during the summer. Participants receive financial support through a student stipend and may also receive funding support for research materials. Available funding includes: Student stipend. Experimental consumables funding of up to £1,000 per project. Example Research Projects Previous internship projects have covered a wide range of innovative fluid dynamics research areas. Examples include: Atmospheric water harvesting in plants. Developing reliable meshes for vascular flow simulation using machine learning. Creating and validating a 3D-printed cardiovascular flow system. Developing drone wind estimation systems using drone movement data. Studying gravitational fractional separation of microbubbles in 3D-printed microfluidic devices. Investigating hydrogen pre-ignition caused by lubricant droplets. Modelling flow and particle interactions in binder jetting additive manufacturing. These projects demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of fluid dynamics research and its applications across science, technology, engineering, and healthcare.
