Overview of the Role The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) seeks a dedicated and highly skilled Registered Nurse to provide high-quality general nursing care within its health services division. This full-time role is considered essential, particularly during campus-wide health emergencies, and requires a professional capable of supporting both patient needs and clinical providers in a fast-paced environment. The position is housed within the Department of General Medicine under the Division of Student Affairs. Primary Responsibilities The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive nursing care using evidence-based practices and established medical protocols. Duties include administering treatments according to physician instructions and university health policies, while ensuring that all interventions meet professional standards of nursing practice. The nurse must be able to assess and evaluate a range of patient concerns, determining the appropriate response for routine, abnormal, urgent, or life-threatening situations. This includes maintaining proficiency in essential clinical skills such as injections, diagnostic assessments, and overall patient evaluation. Accurate and timely documentation is an integral part of the role. The nurse will apply knowledge of medical coding guidelines to ensure proper electronic medical recordkeeping. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support the effective operation of the health center. Work Environment and Physical Demands The role requires regular standing, walking, and the use of fine motor skills. The nurse must be able to lift or move items up to 10 pounds and maintain the visual acuity necessary for patient care procedures. As part of a clinical environment, there is inherent exposure to communicable diseases, and adherence to safety protocols is essential. The role also falls under occupational categories involving potential bloodborne pathogen exposure and respiratory protection requirements. Licensing Requirements Candidates must hold an active license from the Maryland State Board of Nursing at the time of hire and throughout employment. Current CPR certification is also required. Proof of nursing licensure must be included with application materials. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and have at least three years of professional nursing experience. They should demonstrate strong knowledge of patient assessment, treatment methods, and nursing education practices. Competency in medical coding and electronic health records is essential, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. The role requires strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to chart accurately, and the capacity to relay clinical information effectively to medical staff. Candidates must be able to interpret technical guidelines, regulatory information, and professional literature. The ability to multitask while maintaining a high standard of customer service within a diverse university community is central to success in this role. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with a college-aged population is preferred. This background enhances the nurse’s ability to understand the unique needs and health concerns of young adults in a campus environment. Additional Employment Details UMCP will not provide visa sponsorship for this position, either currently or in the future. The salary range is $81,000 to $95,000, with full benefits available to regular exempt staff. Required application materials include a cover letter, résumé, and proof of nursing licensure.
