The University of Michigan School of Information has announced applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position focused on critical research in technology, artificial intelligence, ethics, privacy, identity, and justice. Key Responsibilities The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will participate in both independent and collaborative research activities. Core responsibilities include: Designing and leading research studies Conducting data collection and analysis Preparing academic publications Co-authoring scholarly articles Developing presentations and reports Supporting grant proposal writing Collaborating on interdisciplinary projects Assisting with related research activities The role is designed to support the fellow’s scholarly development, publication record, and long-term academic career growth. Work Schedule and Location The fellowship is a full-time appointment requiring: 40 hours per week The role offers flexibility in scheduling, provided communication and collaboration expectations are met. The position is based in Ann Arbor and includes: On-site work opportunities Hybrid work arrangements Potential remote work within the United States However, applicants must: Be eligible to work in the United States Conduct work from within the United States Not require visa sponsorship The institution has clarified that employment outside the United States is not permitted for this position. Duration of Appointment The initial appointment is for: One year The fellowship may be renewed for up to: Two additional years Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluations. Required Qualifications Applicants must hold: A completed PhD by the fellowship start date Relevant academic disciplines include: Information Studies Science and Technology Studies Gender Studies Communication Social Sciences Law Public Policy Computer Science Related interdisciplinary fields Candidates should also demonstrate: Experience publishing academic research Interest in socio-technical challenges Expertise in at least one fellowship research area Preferred Qualifications The fellowship strongly values candidates with expertise in: Qualitative research methods Interviews and focus groups Participatory design Design fiction Critical and interpretive methodologies Additional desirable experience includes research on: AI ethics Privacy and surveillance Algorithms and society Fairness and accountability in AI Technology and law AI governance and policy Research involving marginalized populations Quantitative research experience, including surveys and experimental methods, is also considered an advantage.
